Running a rescue is by far the hardest thing I have ever done. I thought I had difficult jobs before starting Vintage Pet Rescue, but I was wrong. I was definitely not living up to my full potential or pushing myself at all. This work is mentally, physically, and emotionally exhausting. I’m very proud of what we’ve accomplished but I question my decision daily.

I think I speak for many rescues when I say that the “constructive criticism” we frequently receive online plays a big role in our mental exhaustion.

“Someone needs a groom.”

“Why are her nails so long?”

“Time for a bath perhaps?”

“Why doesn’t he have a sweater on?”

We know you mean well. You love animals and you want them to get the best care. So do we. That’s why we’ve dedicated our entire life to this.

If you really want to help animals, please keep the critical comments to yourself. Because, when we read these comments, all we hear is, “you’re not doing enough”.

We know a dog needs a bath. But, maybe the priority was taking a critically ill dog to the ER. Where we’re waiting to be seen for 5 hours.

We know a dog needs to be groomed. We are not groomers and it’s not always possible to get a groomer to come out to us immediately.

Yesterday we posted a photo of Malin, who looks incredible after months of care and specialty vet treatment. But, the first 4 comments we received were about her nails being long…

When Malin was found her nails were corkscrews and growing into her paw pads. Her owner is slowly working to trim them down but unfortunately she has very long quicks. Malin has been to the vet 6 times since December. Her nails are being trimmed as often as possible. We are spending most of our time addressing her blood disorder, hair loss, skin issues, eye issues, and IBD.

Again, we know most of you mean well with your comments. You just want to help. But, please realize after a long day of problem solving, vet visits, owner surrender requests, and quality of life decisions; reading a handful of negative, critical comments is just too much.

Rescue is hard. Please do not make it harder on those doing the work.

Chemo day for our Maybelle ♥️ This is her 3rd round of 6. She’s tired but strong. She’s still bartering for extra treats and kicks her sister Bella out of the bed when she’s ready for a nap (we have EIGHT beds for the four dogs, but ya know, if that’s the one that’s calling her lol). You’ll be happy to know she attempted to knock my coffee cup over yesterday so she could grab a quick sip, but much to her dismay mom intervened. We’ve started taking her for more walks to keep her muscle mass in her back legs since she doesn’t run with Svenny much in the yard anymore… she’s changed her role from squirrel chasing partner to supervisor. She’s a bit of a micromanager, quite verbal with her demands of him but we wouldn’t want it any other way. Her quality of life is good and she is still living her best life ♥️ When you’re given an estimated 4-6 weeks after initial diagnosis & you’re feeling this good at week 8 , you’re GRATEFUL 🙏♥️ Maybe one little sip of decaf later today … Thank you for loving her & being part of her journey ♥️♥️
