Today I have officially started my new line of Apothecary baked goods baking trials starting with a new cookie I tentatively call ‘The Raspberry Elixer’ cookie.
I have put a lot of thought into ingredients from a health perspective and also from a ‘how things use to be’ standpoint into these items.
Over the years while baking I have often thought to myself and wondered ‘Why did Grandma’s ( Marjorie) baked goods taste so good..
Was it the love she put into it? Maybe but there was still something missing..
So I started researching and thinking back to ingredients she would use.
She would get her grain in its whole form from a local farmer and stone smash it into flour herself. This was pure organic grain in its whole untouched form. She would pick mulberries and raspberries in the back yard/woods and cherries from my aunt Cheryl’s tree.
She would can them or use fresh or dry them out so she always had them on hand.
Then it came to me..
She used high quality ingredients.. I had that part right but what I was missing is that each item was intentional as well as their source.
Not any cherry would do.. only cherries picked ( usually by me) from Cheryl’s tree would work. A canned cherry just wouldn’t do..
Because she didn’t know where and who the canned cherry came from.
Berries from the local U pick it where she knew the people by name and knew their gardening practices and where they would purchase their seeds from.
It was Dick Shock ( the farmer from church) items from his farm..
It wasn’t just HER love going into the things she baked it was each person loving what they did then all that love and her love and passion all going into them.
Each product came from a person who had pure passion for their product.
Her cookies weren’t just cookies. They were an accumulation of products coming from people she knew that were passionate about the product they put out. Each item intentional..
That is what this line is all about.
I am using flour from Farm2Flour because it is not grocery store flour.
It is freshly stone ground 10,000 year old organic untouched whole grain flour.
It’s small batch and comes from a beautiful family that is beyond passionate about this product.
I’m using organic coconut sugar because of its glycemic index and the deep brown molasses tone it gives.
Every item I am using was picked because I believe in their product and because of the passion they put into it.
I’m telling you now..
I had a completely s**t upbringing in so many ways.. in most every way.
My grandma’s baked goods kept me wanting to get up everyday even tho I knew what was coming when I did.
Her baked goods made me feel good and whole mentally and physically.
They kept me alive and made me want to be alive. They weren’t made with whatever was on sale, they were made with the best of the best from the best.
She was not a rich lady, quite the opposite as far as money was concerned
but even then cared about the end product not the cost.
I’m the same way.
Back to the trial cookies of the day..
I’m trying out 2 different types.. one with organic freeze dried raspberries, organic oats, organic Farm 2 Flour Einkorn Flour, white chocolate, Organic Coconut Sugar, fresh lemon and sea salt from a source I know and trust. The second batch has a higher protein oat and a wild berry mix ( seven sundays) I will try both, tweak to perfection then go with the best .
Man.. If you could only smell this cookie dough.
These baked goods are to heal you.. mentally, physically and emotionally from today’s ills. From a collective of passionate sources with the intention of you getting excited about baked goods again.
