Iconic Destination Restaurant Closes in Fond du Lac, Wisconsin

(Fond du Lac, Wis. — May 27, 2020) — Schreiner’s Restaurant, a Fond du Lac landmark since 1938 serving more than 500,000 guests a year and famous for scratch-prepared food and bakery, is closing its doors.

Paul Cunningham who began his Schreiner's career in 1969 as a 15-year-old busboy, and his wife Joan are owners of this historic restaurant. The Cunningham’s were assisted in management by their daughter and son-in-law Marcia and Nathan Haupt. These four members of management have collectively worked for over 100 years at Schreiner's.

“It has been my incredible honor to be a part of Schreiner’s Restaurant for most of my life, from busboy to baker/cook to owner. My time with original owners Bernie and Maureen Schreiner was invaluable and a true joy. Ultimately the formula for success for the Schreiners’ was simple: serve great food at a fair price and treat customers and employees as family” says Paul Cunningham, president of Schreiner’s.
The Cunningham and Haupt families are sincerely and deeply grateful for the staff they have had at Schreiner’s. Twenty-four Schreiner’s crew members have been employed at the restaurant for more than 20 years, including five who have worked there for more than 40 years.

“Our families’ decision to not re-open Schreiner’s Restaurant was not one that we made easily; unfortunately, it was unavoidable and our only real option given the economics associated with the current pandemic crisis. The friendships and connections that we have been so blessed to have made over the years with our amazing staff and guests will never be forgotten” says Nathan Haupt, general manager of Schreiner’s.

When Destination Lake Winnebago Region, the areas visitor’s bureau, did its original branding research a decade ago, it immediately became clear that the iconic restaurant was one of — if not THE— most well-known attributes of Fond du Lac. “What an awesome and welcoming beacon it has been for this community for generations and generations!” says Craig Molitor, president of Destination Lake Winnebago Region.

“Schreiner’s offering of old-world friendliness and celebration of comfort food with traditional family recipes, combined with the recent addition of Bernie’s Pub made it a destination restaurant any community would love to have. The food, the friends, and the iconic business will be missed” Molitor went on to say.

The Cunningham and Haupt families stated in near unison that “the pleasure was all ours to work with and serve such dedicated and wonderful folks!”

For the foreseeable future this press release will be the final statement from the family as they all bid farewell to this storied chapter and look forward to new opportunities.

Dear Schreiner's family, Just wanted to let you know that we're thinking of you all and sending much care to you. We got the news from my Dad in Brookfield that the restaurant was closing this week, and it has felt ever since like there has been a death in our family. Growing up in Milwaukee and West Bend, I've been coming to Schreiner's since I was 5 years old, most often during the week of Oshkosh. I'm 52 now! Even when I moved away from WI for high school and beyond, I always continued the pilgrimage home yearly in the summer, and always, always my Dad and I would come to Schreiner’s. I first introduced my husband to your roast beef hash in 1997 (we were dating then and he had come to meet my family in WI and to go to OSH), and when I realized he truly understood the importance of Schreiner's in our lives, I decided that we could be married, which we did in 2000. Our two boys have literally grown up coming to Schreiner’s every summer during OSH and love it as much as their parents do. Perhaps it was the hugs, the bacon, the extra whipped cream on their hot chocolates, or maybe it was when they were finally achieved being taller than Cheri, but they loved coming in the mornings for breakfast during OSH weeks. We never missed a chance to bring out of town guests to Schreiner's with us during OSH and they loved it as much as we did. Friends from NC, Belgium, and South Korea all had a opportunity to experience your wonderful food and hospitality over the years! Please know that we are sending you all our best wishes and many many thanks for such good food, care and memories throughout the years. OSH will never be the same for us without you. WIth love and gratitude, Danna, Bob, Ethan and Byron Park Asheville, NC
Sorry to hear that y'all will not re-open. Though my immediate family now lives in the south, many of our family members are sad for you. Are y'all willing to sell the restaurant for someone else to continue the legacy?
Schreiner's team members, We are saddened to hear that a longstanding business has closed in the Fond Du Lac Community. We loved going for some great food and prompt and friendly service. To any team members that have been displaced, please consider working for Frontida Assisted Living. We value hard work and prompt service, which we know you exhibited everyday. I am so very sorry to hear of your closing. You have been a landmark in my life. From the time I was a child, and growing up, I came quite often with my grandparents to enjoy the best quality food including some favorites: fish fry, salmon patties, grilled cheese, lemon meringue and coconut cream pies, salad with your amazing house dressing and my all time favorite - your famous clam chowder. It was always a special outing with my grandparents and the staff we came to know by first names and hugs throughout the years. In 1998 my grandma was dying of lymphoma and all of the waitresses signed a Schreiners placemat which I hung in her hospital room to show her all her friends loved her. Schreiners has been an important part of my life and I am so sad to see you go. Thank you for the wonderful food and service. Health, and Best wishes to you all. Marianne (Darlene & LeRoy Weingarten)
Ah... The memories. Any trip to Oshkosh or up North included a stop at Schreiner's. What a place!
So sorry to hear you are closing. Have had many excellent meals there over the years. Will miss all the great food & staff. Thank you
Hope we have heard incorrectly that you intend to close. That will be a big loss!
Excellent fish fry last night. We had the haddock and the shrimp. Also really enjoyed the apple pie for dessert. Our compliments to the chef.
ANY IDEA WHEN YOU PLAN TO RE OPEN? WE MISS YOU
Another great meal. The shrimp was so good.
I had the best brunch today, favorite quiche and even have a Schrieners mug. Thanks for having "Pick Up" :)
Thank you, Paul, for this very precious cup and saucer! I made the candle with soy wax that is nontoxic, so I can still enjoy my morning coffee or afternoon tea in it when the candle is done.
