I’ve been wanting to make this post for a while, and after the last couple of weeks, I feel like it’s finally time to say something.
If you’ve met me personally or supported our farmstand, I hope you know that I genuinely try to lead with kindness. I have poured so much of myself into this little business, and every day I do my best to keep things running smoothly, provide wholesome products our community wants, and create a place people enjoy visiting.
Unfortunately, over the past couple of weeks, we have been dealing with repeated complaints from another local small business in an effort to challenge how we operate. I will not be naming the business involved because this post is not meant to encourage negativity, harassment, or retaliation toward anyone. I simply feel that our customers deserve to know what has been happening behind the scenes.
We have cooperated with every department that has contacted us. We recently went through an inspection with the Health Department and passed with flying colors. Now, another complaint has been made involving zoning, and we are continuing to cooperate and handle everything appropriately.
What hurts the most is that this is coming from another small business.
One of the biggest reasons I have vendors in my farmstand is because I believe small businesses should support other small businesses. Yes, bringing in vendors helps our farmstand grow, but it also gives someone else an opportunity to grow too. The mom selling something on our shelves may be using that money to buy her child a birthday present, pay the water bill, buy groceries, or simply help her family get through the month.
THAT is the kind of community I want to build.
I’m not perfect. I make mistakes, I have things to learn, and there will always be room for improvement. If there is something we need to correct, we will correct it. But there is a big difference between holding a business accountable and repeatedly trying to tear down another small business.
There is room for all of us to succeed.
So this is simply your reminder to support your local farmers, farmstands, makers, moms, families, and small businesses. Behind every little roadside stand, booth, table, and handmade product is a real person working hard to build something.
And if a local business simply isn’t for you, that’s okay too. You don’t have to shop there. But kindness costs nothing.
We’re going to keep showing up, keep doing things the right way, keep supporting other local businesses, and keep building the community we set out to build.
