Leather has been used in hydraulic sealing applications for generations because its natural fiber structure provides a combination of flexibility, toughness, abrasion resistance, and low friction.

But material selection still matters. The right leather, construction, dimensions, and treatment depend on the specific application and operating conditions. When a seal wears out, should you replace it—or have it reproduced? If a standard replacement is readily available and meets the application's requirements, replacement may be the simplest solution.

But what happens when:
• The original manufacturer is no longer in business?
• The part is obsolete?
• The original dimensions are unusual?
• The equipment predates current part-number systems?
• A replacement doesn't match the original application?

In those situations, reproducing or custom-manufacturing the sealing component may be a better path. For legacy equipment, the challenge isn't always finding a seal. It's finding the right seal for the machine.

Some machines are older than the parts available for them. That can create a difficult situation for maintenance teams and restoration specialists. The equipment may still be valuable. The original design may still work. But the replacement seal, packing, belt, or other component may no longer be available from the original manufacturer. That's where custom manufacturing can make a difference.

Instead of replacing an entire machine because one component is obsolete, it may be possible to reproduce the part and keep proven equipment in service. For legacy machinery, replacement doesn't always mean replacement of the machine.

A small sealing component may not attract much attention once it's installed inside a machine—but its dimensions, material, finish, and fit can all matter to the performance of the equipment around it.
