Mable Tate becomes pre-adolescent Nate Jett’s guardian when her sister dies. Mable has a son, Randolf, who is a couple of years older than Nate. Nate, Aunt Mable, and Cousin Randy have a contentious relationship. Nate thinks his relatives are abusing money derived from his mother’s death. Still, he stays with his relatives until he goes off to college. They are relatives by blood and family by circumstance.
The money issue creates a rift in family relations. The animosity between Nate and his aunt makes communication infrequent. But after Cousin Randolf hasn’t been home for a few days, Mable asks Nate to find him. What Nate finds are family secrets: some ugly ones, one lovely one.
