at summer school pick-up for my almost five-year-old, i noticed a teacher kept staring at me.
when our eyes connected, she finally said, “do you have three girls?”
"i have four. my oldest is at another camp,” i smiled.
“i have three girls. they’re in their twenties now, but you reminded me of how i used to be. you’ll miss this so much,” her eyes welled with tears as she spoke.
my heart cried for her as it hit me.
those moms who say, “one day you’ll miss this,” or "it goes by so fast," are often seen as belittling us newer mom’s hard,
like they’re just telling us to suck it up.
and yes, sometimes their timing is off when they say it to the mom dealing with a tantrum at the store or refereeing a sibling fight.
but that’s not their intention.
they say it simply because that’s how 𝘵𝘩𝘦𝘺 feel.
because staring at you, makes 𝘵𝘩𝘦𝘮 nostalgic.
because they know firsthand through watching their children grow up that it’s the greatest joy but has also shattered their hearts.
and you still have time.
so, we need to forgive the mom shopping for jeans with her college-aged daughter,
and the grandma buying milk at the store,
and politely smile—
even if through gritted teeth.
because i know we may not see it yet
because we’re knee-deep
in tantrums,
and exhaustion.
but all those veteran moms only say those words
because they see the ghost of who their family used to be in you,
and gosh,
they miss it.
