Today, at Lake George Battlefield Park in Lake George, NY members of our chapter as well as other members of the Sons of the American Revolution attended the dedication of the Repose of the Fallen where the remains of 44 Revolutionary War soldiers were reinterred. The SAR and DAR placed wreaths at the site. The Empire State (NY) Society of the Sons of the American Revolution (ESSSAR) contributed 5 granite benches to the site. Later at a reception luncheon, President Middlebrook accepted a plaque presented to the ESSSAR recognizing this contribution of approximately $20,000 in Society funds. The 250th Committee was also on hand offering the first two challenge coins in our 250th series for sale, raising $1,542 for future 250th commemoration projects around New York State. Compatriots from Pennsylvania, Vermont and Massachusetts stopped by to grab their coins and socialize with our members. Hopefully more pictures will follow from others as it was a well attended event and we were very busy so limited pictures.

For todayโ€™s ๐—ง๐˜‚๐—ฒ๐˜€๐—ฑ๐—ฎ๐˜† ๐Ÿฎ๐Ÿฑ๐Ÿฌ ๐—ง๐—ฟ๐—ถ๐˜ƒ๐—ถ๐—ฎ, weโ€™re digging into a Revolutionary War mystery hidden in our own backyard: ๐—ง๐—ต๐—ฒ ๐—•๐—ฎ๐˜๐˜๐—น๐—ฒ ๐—ผ๐—ณ ๐—˜๐—ด๐—ฟ๐—ฒ๐—บ๐—ผ๐—ป๐˜. ๐Ÿ‡บ๐Ÿ‡ธโš”๏ธ

If you look for this battle on a map of Massachusetts, youโ€™ll come up empty. Thatโ€™s because despite the name, this clash actually took place right here in Columbia County!

History usually names battles after their location, but this one was named after the people who fought it.

In May 1777, a signifigant Loyalist recruitment plot was uncovered in Livingston Manor. A desperate call for help went out, and the militia from Egremont, MA, grabbed their muskets and marched over the Taghkanic hills to assist our local 9th Albany/Claverack Regiment. Because the Egremont men were so instrumental in the victory, the name "Battle of Egremont" followed them homeโ€”even though the smoke cleared on New York soil.

This didn't happen on a single battlefield...instead it was a tense, two-day pursuit through the rolling Columbia County landscape:

The first shots were fired at the Jury Wheeler farm near the eastern border.

A major confrontation broke out near the "Great Lake." Imagine 100 Loyalists facing off against the militia right where families now spend their summers!

The fighting continued as the militia pursued the Loyalists through the woods toward what was then known as "Nobletown."

This wasn't just a small neighborhood spat. British General Burgoyne was preparing to invade from the north, and local Loyalists were secretly organizing to join him. By stopping this recruitment ring, these neighbors-turned-soldiers secured the Hudson Valley just months before the pivotal Battle of Saratoga.
