My Story
A few years back I decided to make my husbands 40th birthday cake. It was a large task (I had never made cakes before) but I was willing to do that because he’s awesome and deserved a super cool cake. He loves Grateful Dead so I wanted to give him something memorable. It was also a surprise party, so I had to have enough to feed 50 people. Ok fine. Grateful Dead cake....easy peasy right??
To youtube I went looking up various “how to” videos for cake decorating. I went out and got some basic necessary tools and ingredients and dived in head first. I may or may not have taken a breath in there..probably not.
I vividly remember saying to myself a few times how incredibly impossible this was. I may have cursed and even questioned my actual love for him a few times...shh don’t tell him that part.
So after a few days, with my fingers and face died all sorts of colors, I came up with a pretty cool and surprisingly well done Grateful Dead two tiered tie dyed cake. I was impressed with myself. I delivered it to our venue and waited patiently for him to see it. He said he loved it and people complimented on a job well done. He made a joke as he pulled me aside to tell me that the whole entire graphic of the Stealie was backwards....oh boy. I laughed it off but man I thought I had that in the bag! I walked away that day feeling discouraged and embarrassed. I wanted it to be perfect for him. I felt like a failure and pretty much decided to never make cakes again.
