One day I asked myself a question, Shakia, what do you see yourself doing for the next 5-10 years that will be both fulfilling and rewarding? My answer came to me so quickly as if I already knew what I was supposed to be doing. That answer was cooking foods that nourish the soul and feeding my community. Not just feeding them food, but knowledge and wisdom too. Personally, I enjoy everything about food from the fresh ingredients, distinctive smells, and the creativity; to the happy dance and smiles of approval after the first bite and the lean back in the chair to give you more breathing room once stuffed. Cooking and feeding others has always been my happy place and was a no brainer for me.

Growing up, Sunday dinner was the meal I looked forward to because I would wake up to the sweet aroma of all the well known soul food favorites. Macaroni & Cheese, Collard Greens, Yams, Fried Chicken, Potato Salad, and Pound Cake just to name a few. It is my goal for people to experience that same feeling of happiness that I felt every week when they dine with Polly’s Kitchen. Although, many look forward to eating the food, I always looked forward to the quality time and laughs shared amongst family and close friends. From the priceless conversations and shared wisdom of the elders to the cutting up and jokes; Sunday dinners were always the best.
