Finishing a back-post tenon on the lathe, then checking the fit on a white oak rocking chair.

Those walnut posts are temporary pieces for checking the angles. The finished posts will be white oak.

Little by little, it’s starting to look like a chair.

A chunk of wood, two hands, and a whole lot of shavings.

I carve each bowl individually, working with the grain and letting the shape develop along the way. No two ever come out quite alike—and that’s what I enjoy about making them.

A little shop talk while I soften the sharp edges on these cherry rocking-chair back ribs.

I shape each chamfer by eye with a spokeshave, checking it as I go. It’s a small detail, but it changes how the piece looks and feels.

Square to octagonal, all shaped by eye with a drawknife and spokeshave. I like the character the flat faces give these rocker legs.

A bandsaw gets me close. The knife lets me shape the details by hand.

Wharton Esherick once joked, “I’ll use my teeth if I have to.” I know what he meant—use the tool that gets the wood where you want it.

Every curved back slat has to be individually shaped and fitted by hand.

It’s slow work, but getting this part right is what gives the finished rocking chair back its shape and makes it comfortable.

The backs for these two handcrafted rocking chairs are one step closer.

I make handcrafted furniture, traditional wooden dough bowls, and smaller wooden pieces—one piece at a time here in Union Grove, North Carolina.

Rocking chairs currently start around $2,500. Pricing for other pieces depends on the design, wood, size, and time involved.

These curved back slats need angled joints on both ends, but the two angles aren’t the same.

I made two separate fixtures to hold each curved piece in the correct position while I cut the joints. Then I fine-tune them by hand until everything fits the way it should.

Just one of the many small steps that goes into building a rocking chair by hand.
