🐝 FROM TINY EGG TO HONEY BEE 🍯
Every honey bee buzzing around the garden began as a tiny egg tucked inside a wax cell. In just a few short weeks, that egg undergoes an incredible transformation through four stages: egg, larva, pupa, and adult.
🥚 EGG | About 3 days
The queen lays one egg in each brood cell. Fertilized eggs become female workers or queens, while unfertilized eggs become male drones.
🐛 LARVA | Growing fast!
After about three days, the egg hatches into a tiny white larva. Nurse bees feed and care for it as it grows rapidly and molts several times.
🔒 CAPPED BROOD → PUPA
Once the larva is ready, worker bees cap the cell with wax. Hidden underneath, one of the most amazing parts of the transformation begins.
During the pupal stage, the developing bee forms its wings, legs, antennae, eyes, body hairs, and other adult features until it finally looks like the honey bee we recognize.
🌼 ADULT BEE | Time to emerge!
When development is complete, the new bee chews through the wax capping and emerges from its cell.
The total development time depends on the type of bee:
👑 Queen: about 16 days
🐝 Worker: about 21 days
🚹 Drone: about 24 days
A newly emerged worker doesn’t immediately head for the flowers, either! Young workers begin with jobs inside the hive—cleaning cells, caring for brood, handling nectar, producing wax, and guarding the colony. As they mature, they eventually become the foragers we see visiting our gardens. 🌸
For beekeepers, recognizing eggs, larvae, capped brood, and emerging bees is like reading the story of the hive. Seeing a healthy mix of these stages is one of the ways we know a colony is actively raising its next generation.
🥚 → 🐛 → 🐝 → 🌼 → and the cycle begins again.
At Bluebird Acres, keeping bees isn’t only about the honey. It’s about learning from them, caring for the colony, and appreciating the incredible little world happening inside every hive. 💙🐝
Where hope takes root. 🌱
