The Village Baker

The Village Baker Delicious baked goods and elegant mini-desserts, made from scratch by a third-generation baker. At all times, her gold standard is: Is it as good as Dad’s?

The Village Baker, owned and operated by Fran Ferrell and Kathy Waddle, is based in Chapel Hill. We bake at the Piedmont Food and Agricultural Processing Center in Hillsborough, and have also been approved by the NCDA to bake in the home kitchen. Fran is a third-generation baker who grew up in her family’s bakeries and woke up to the aroma of fresh bread baking every morning. Her dad put her to wo

rk in his bakery when she was 10 years old; she wants to make the baked goods she remembers from her childhood (and that you may remember from yours). At the same time, her creative streak compels her to try new things, and she likes the challenge of baking with what’s in season. Kathy has had a long career as a chemist, and has recently left the corporate shtick behind to add her considerable expertise and off-the-wall ideas to The Village Baker. Because we believe that we need to respect our planet, and we think that the animals that provide our food deserve to be treated decently, we choose our ingredients with great care. Everything we use in our baked goods is of the highest quality, and because we want to support other local businesses, we like to buy from our neighbors when we can.

Things are looking good at the new bakery space! We are really liking this ceiling. That's Fran admiring, and Kathy doing what she does so well -- supervising! :-)

These guys from the Chapel Hill Moving Company, Inc. muscled some very heavy equipment into our new baking space! It's starting to look like a bakeshop in there.

Pink, you are a perfectly fine color. But you're not OUR color. So we're sorry, but you have to go. We'll see you at the next pink flamingo party. But in the meantime... So long. Farewell. Auf Wiedersehen. Good-bye!!

This is how you celebrate when you sign a lease on your new baking space! Excited? Yes we are!

Came upon this collection of old photos from Life magazine, taken in 1939 in the Kansas wheat fields. I particularly like the ones that show the printed cotton flour sacks, used by women to make dresses and other clothing. And quilts! Some of this old flour sack material can still be had--for a price! The printing on the bags was made to wash out.

Interesting that the flour was "Sunbonnet Sue" flour. Anybody who quilts knows about the Sunbonnet Sue pattern.

Experimenting with making some pasties. Fran's grandfather was a miner from Cornwall; pasties were the "hand pies" the miners took into the mines for lunch. In the process of doing a little research, we were on the UK Amazon site, and the US Amazon site. The UK site had several books about the Cornish miners, and pasties in particular. Want to guess what came up FIRST on the U.S. Amazon site? Um, here's an example. Needless to say, not what we were looking for.
