We took the next step! Big thank you to our local AI guy, Jack! Our dairy girl, Ina, responded super well to the process, being inseminated with Angus bull semen this afternoon. It's a small window, ranging between 12-18 hours when insemination is viable. Without a bull in the field, it's sometimes a gamble to know when its time. Here's to keeping our fingers crossed! If there are no signs of heat in the next 16- 24 days, we will be in good standing. A blood test can also confirm.

Did you know: A bovine carries a calf for about 283 days, about 9 months! This would put Ina's possible due date about August 10th. Leo calf!

If "keeping up with the Joneses" is your idea of success, might I suggest building a fire in a Woodstove, picking up a book, planting a few seeds in the soil and sipping slowly on a cup of coffee... just as an experiment... and see what brings you more peace, more joy, and a deeper sense of authenticity.

What a lovely day for home-making! Apple pie with lard crust as promised! And while it continued to rain, orange slices in the oven dehydrating for Solstice ambiance, and salt dough ornaments, with ginger, cinnamon and nutmeg to bring out all the aromas!

I haven't always loved Red Eyed Whites (REWs) but there is something about this doe that just makes me swoon! Her coat is dense and full. Her dewlap (the folds under her chin) is large for her age and she is the sweetest! She comes to the door for pets and nose nudges! Under her Rew marking, or lack of, is a whole genetic make up that we won't know until she kindles her first litter. Looking to breed her with our Otter or Chocolate buck. Rabbit genetics are complicated and it's literally like going down the rabbit hole.... researchers beware!

*Cheap trick -- Did you know a trio of breeding rabbits would keep a garden full of nitrogen rich, cold compost, rabbit manure gold!? AND rabbit meat has more protein than chicken or beef and would fill your freezer for less than what you're likely going to find in the grocery store in the near future.
