"It's that time of year when I go into a frenzy of making Irish soda bread. I don’t know if it’s a vestige of my time in schools when coordinating daily life with seasons and holidays was the norm or my ancestors agitating in my bones, but when the calendar flips to March, I just can’t help myself. This year, I’ve at least diversified my annual abrupt foray into Irish 'cuisine' and made an enormous Guinness pie. Never one to let a tradition pass through me untouched, though, I did it vegan. I can hear my mother’s eyes rolling in her grave."

Find out why! A new reflection (and a recipe for Irish soda bread) is up on my blog.

Whatcha doin on Wednesday, March 25? Say, around 4:30pmPT/7:30pmET? I'm facilitating the Beacon Hill Friends House MIDWEEK program. Wanna join? Register at https://shorturl.at/kw4ne (also on my linktree).

MIDWEEK: Experiments in Faithfulness is a weekly facilitated program that engages unique spiritual practices. It's free and open to the public. If you're in Boston you can join in person, but anyone can join via Zoom.

I've titled my session "Grief and other sources of joy." Sounds like a hoot, right? I promise - it won't be (too) heavy, and the emphasis will be on the joy.

I'll start by posing a few questions to think about and read an excerpt of "six to carry the casket and one to say the mass." It's an essay about my mother, really how our relationship shaped me, but writing it was an exercise is remembering, in reconstructing a memory. It wasn't about just summarizing the past - it was about healing what needed to be healed, letting go of what I was ready to let go, and, most importantly, figuring out what I wanted to hold on to and to continue to shape me. And that's where I found the joy.

After the excerpt, I'll lead a brief guided meditation, and then prompt some reflection and dialogue about how we remember people.

I hope you'll consider joining! Register at https://shorturl.at/kw4ne

Proceeds from ticket sales will be donated to On The Rise, a daytime safe haven in Cambridge offering essential support and community to women, transgender, and nonbinary people recovering from homelessness.
