Tomorrow, Saturday August 23rd.

I miss some things.

Like eating a coconut that just came off a tree.

Or from a jellyman selling jelly coconut on the side of the road who would cut off the top so smooth with his Cutlass and give you in your hand to drink the jelly water straight from the young coconut.

And if it's sweet, he would ask you how much you want, and slice the tops and pour the water into a litre bottle.

"You want jelly?". Of course I want the jelly. I always want my jelly you see. So he would cut them open after he pours off the water , and cut a spoon from the hard green shell off the coconut. Boy I could eat jelly for days.

Or take a brown coconut and dig out the eyes to drain the water off before you crack it open to grate the coconut. Then use it to bake or make coconut milk.

I guess I was just feeling for coconut 🤷🏿.

So I made some coconut cake. And banana bread. And Sugar City Slices with raisin filling. And I have some sorrel to drink with it.

I'll be at the Women's Market tomorrow in City Hall.

If you do nothing else tomorrow, come treat yourself to a slice of this Breadnut Banana bread. A hefty slice.

Breadnut was one of my all time favorite snacks as a child and is very popular at home. Boiled and salted or simply roasted it has a delicious, slightly sweet nutty flavor - similar to a chestnut in both flavor and texture. The scientific name is Artocarpus camansi - a wild ancestor to the breadfruit (another popular Antillean dish), and closely related to the jackfruit - it's apparently a native of Papua New Guinea, Indonesia and the Philippines.

I'm not sure how this delicious treat made it's way to the Caribbean - all I know is that it got there before I did! Respect.

So imagine this roasted with maple syrup into freshly baked scones. Or paired with bananas using the natural mild sweetness of both for a diabetic friendly banana bread. Mmmm...

Curious? Come taste Kittitian breadnuts in one of these treats at -The People's Market - this Saturday:

Breadnut was one of my all time favorite snacks as a child and is very popular at home. Boiled and salted or simply roasted it has a delicious, slightly sweet nutty flavor - similar to a chestnut in both flavor and texture.
