Cake is not JUST cake.
When you order a custom cake, you are not simply paying for flour, sugar, butter and eggs. You are paying for an entire process, a stocked kitchen, specialized tools, years of experience, and an artist’s time.
Before I ever decorate a cake, there are ingredients and supplies: flour, sugar, butter, eggs, oils, vanilla, almond and other flavorings, fillings, powdered sugar, food colorings, fondant, sprinkles, nonpareils, edible glitter, dusts, paints, pan spray, cake boards, cake circles, board coverings, boxes, ribbon, dowels, supports and more.
Then there is the equipment and inventory that makes custom work possible: mixers, pans, turntables, scrapers, spatulas, offset spatulas, piping bags, dozens of piping tips, cutters, molds, palette knives, paint brushes, fondant tools and all of those tiny specialty tools accumulated over years of decorating.
And then there is TIME.
Shopping for ingredients and supplies. Mixing batter. Preparing pans. Baking. Cooling. Making fillings and buttercream. Coloring buttercream. Leveling, filling and stacking layers. Crumb coating. Chilling. Final icing. Piping. Decorating. Making fondant figures, letters, flowers and toppers. Painting and dusting details. Cleaning before, during and after the process. Packaging. Delivering. And setting up.
Sometimes there are additional specialty expenses, too. For example, when a design requires an edible image, I pay another small business to create it for me. That means the cost of the image, plus my time and gas to pick it up. I choose not to invest in an edible printer because I simply do not use one often enough to justify the expense.
There is also something you cannot put into a mixing bowl: experience.
When you hire a custom cake artist, you are paying for the schooling, education, training, practice, mistakes, problem-solving and thousands of hours spent developing that craft.
Custom cake pricing will never compete with mass-production pricing, and it isn’t supposed to.
There is absolutely nothing wrong with buying a cake from Walmart, Sam’s or your local grocery store. They serve a completely different market, and sometimes an inexpensive cake is exactly what someone needs.
But mass-produced cakes and custom-created cakes are not the same product.
Large retailers have purchasing power, centralized production, standardized ingredients, limited designs and systems that allow them to produce cakes in enormous quantities at prices a small custom baker simply cannot duplicate.
A custom baker is creating something specifically for YOU.
Your colors.
Your flavor.
Your design.
Your theme.
Your celebration.
Everything that leaves my kitchen is baked and made from scratch, and every custom decoration is created specifically for that order.
And I will not apologize for charging appropriately for my work.
I have spent decades learning, practicing and perfecting this craft. I believe artists and small-business owners deserve to be paid for their ingredients, their expenses, their time, their knowledge and their talent.
And because the costs of ingredients, packaging, supplies, fuel and nearly everything required to operate a small business continue to rise, Sugar Magnolia Cakery pricing will be adjusted beginning in 2027.
I will always do my best to offer options for different budgets, but I will not lower the quality of my ingredients or the standards of my work simply to compete with mass-produced cake pricing.
You aren’t just buying cake.
You’re buying ingredients.
You’re buying time.
You’re buying skill.
You’re buying equipment.
You’re buying creativity.
You’re buying experience.
You’re buying craftsmanship.
And most importantly, you’re buying something made especially for you.
Cake is food.
Custom cake is art. 🎂✨
TLDR “Cake is not JUST cake”
