Happy Autism Empowerment Month! This is Carly Feins, owner and operator of Carly’s Custom Cakes to share a bit of info for the masses about how to celebrate in a respectful manner!
1. DO NOT DONATE/SUPPORT TO AUTISM SPEAKS! None of the people on the board are autistic, and their work is more harmful than helpful (makes the stigma worse, their research has legitimately killed people, turn autistic people into scapegoats).
Go to organizations such as @autisticselfadvocacy instead. Nothing about us without us!
2. When it comes to autism “experts”, it’s the people who are ACTUALLY AUTISTIC that are the true experts. Doesn’t matter if you have a degree in psychology or whatever - if you don’t have autism yourself, or live that life as a parent or sibling, you don’t really know anything.
So, talk to people who are actually autistic about their experiences, likes and dislikes, how you can help them if they need it. @temple_grandin is a prime example.
But remember: if they have the capability and desire to self-advocate, PLEASE LET THEM!
3. Please #wearredinstead instead of Light it Up Blue. And don’t participate in any rallies that utilize anything indicative of Autism Speaks. Like I said, they’re dangerous to us.
Instead, try attending or organizing events with @autisticselfadvocacy in mind. Try performances where the lights and music are down, any sensory-friendly events, etc.
4. Support and buy from small businesses owned by autistic people or their family members (myself, @elder_and_willow). This is especially important right now!

My name is Carly Feins, I’m going to be 26 this July, and I’m the owner/operator of Carly’s Custom Cakes.
According to my older sister, “Food was [my] pacifier.” She’s right. I’ve always had a sweet tooth!🤣 Even today, I have food on the brain.
I got into baking when I was about eleven years old. I was in my first Home Ec class and we learned how to make snickerdoodles. Around the same time, I saw my aunt @deliciousdessertscapecod compete on Food Network Challenge Tag Team Cakes (for those who have Discovery+ that would be Food Network Challenge Season 7 episode 3). I fell in love with the industry ever since.
I was Class of 2015 @bhsbulldogsnh and I graduated magma come pause from @jwuprovidence in 2019. It wasn’t without struggles, though. After graduation, getting a job was next to impossible. I admit that I got lucky after two months, and then this entire COVID-19 crisis started and I had to quit.
Don’t get me wrong, I wanted to work as a cake decorator in a bakery and gain some experience before striking out on my, but being autistic, the big systems don’t work for me.
So, my parents came up with a solution: get the house kitchen inspected and certified!
This was my mom’s idea (and am I glad she did!), because thanks to that, I can bake and decorate cupcakes, cookies, and whole cakes on my own terms! It’s great for my craft and mental health!

Did you know that some brands of vanilla extract have corn syrup in them? I happen to MAKE my own vanilla extract! It’s just straight (cheap) 40 proof vodka and vanilla beans! I also put spent vanilla pods in a container of sugar!
