Before Rabbit Hole was a vendor at the Bartlesville Farmers Market, we were customers. We had a tradition of hitting the market each weekend, loading up on fresh produce and goods, and making a delicious brunch before I'd go on duty in the afternoon. It definitely made for a long day, especially nights when I'd work until early into Sunday morning, but was always a highlight of my week. I loved watching the produce change as the weather got warmer. The spring salad greens, early veggies like radish, turnip and beets and herbs slowly shifting to summer squash, peppers, and tomatoes before the winter squash and another round of greens arrive before frost. It was, and still is, important to us to eat seasonally.
This is also a trend you'll see when you view our canned goods and what we offer throughout the year. While canning is a preservation method we utilize heavily at Rabbit Hole, we still want to ensure the produce we use is as fresh as possible. Some of our customer favorites, like our apple butter and peach jalapeño jam, have been missing from our farmers market table this year and it's not because we don't plan on having it again this year, it's simply because it was so popular in previous years that you've bought all my stock and it's simply not apple or peach season yet!
Each year, I make multiple trips to Livesay Orchards in Porter, OK to buy bushels of peaches, apples, and even the watermelon for our watermelon lemonade concentrate. I've been watching their socials closely because an unexpected frost in March threatened this year's peach crop but it appears they're still hoping for peaches to be ready sometime in June. That means lots of canned peach goodies shortly after for you! Apples are a late summer or early fall crop, depending on variety, so my apple butter lovers have a bit longer to wait unfortunately but know that it will be coming back. I'll be making more jars of my peach and apple products than I have in the past but know that once it's gone, it's gone until the crops is back in season so you may want to get it early or stock up.
Now, for anyone still reading this far, I've got one more treat. Just because we're vendors at the Market now, doesn't mean we aren't still customers as well. In fact, here's just some of the goodies we picked up this past weekend (minus what was eaten before I could snap the picture of course 😉). I don't always get a chance to step away from my table during busy days though, so I want to give back while also having a little fun.
Beginning this Saturday, I'll make a post after the market. In the comments of that post, share with me a picture of your Market haul. On Wednesday, I'll put the names of everyone that participated into a number generator and draw a random winner who will get a loaf of our classic sandwich bread at the following Saturday market. The best part? You don't need to purchase ANY Rabbit Hole products for you to participate. (Of course we love when you do though!) Just support at least one of my Market friends, let me see the good stuff I may be missing at the market, and let's all have some fun together!
Can't wait to see everyone on Saturday and I'm so excited to see the goodies you find 💚💚
