Hey all 👋! I’m Vannessa, the silly face behind Confections by Vannessa.
I realized I’ve never introduced myself, so here I am 🙂
A few things about me:
1. I’m a Scorpio and very proud. I was born in Norway 🇳🇴 and my mom’s side is Panamanian and Chinese and my dad’s is British w/a splash of German lol
2. My friends call me a unicorn ✨🦄. Could be worse 😬 🤷♀️
3. I love the water! Sometimes when I’m stressed I sit in my bathtub lol
4. I went to school for fashion and I used to make my own clothes. Now I work in the tech industry. Weird, right? Lol
5. When I’m not making cakes, I’m reading, I’m outside, eating cheese and drinking wine, hanging with my dog and cat.
6. I’m sort of self taught. I did go to culinary school, but that’s not where I learned to decorate. My first job out of culinary school was at a higher end grocery store. I got put in the bakery (YES 💪) but as customer service (NOOO 👎) Afte1r being persistent, I got moved to production...I hated it. I would make 130 lbs of granola and like 50lbs of rice pudding. It was exhausting and I realized I didn’t like mass production. So when I heard they were hiring a cake decorator, I lied and said I could 😬. Y’all I didn’t know how to make a buttercream rose (essential in a grocery store) and I had previously only piped cupcakes. I went home and watched YouTube videos and practice before and after work up until my interview. It’s was a Christmas miracle that I got the job. I had to learn quickly afterwards because remember, I lied. I watch all the people around me and would try new things and practice when they weren’t there or looking LOL.
I’m so glad it worked out bc I literally quit my full time salaried job to pursue my passion for pastry arts. This journey hasn’t been easy, but it’s been worth it. Still trying to figure what I’m doing and where I’m going with all of this Lol but I’m just taking it day by day and going with the flow😊
