This is the time of year when my house smells extra delicious. I’ve been working on Lebkuchen for the past month getting ready for the upcoming Christkindlmarket Des Moines. Every year I make more and every year I still sell out. I think I’m getting people hooked! I’m so happy to be sharing this German Christmas cookie right here in Central Iowa. If you haven’t heard of Lebkuchen come to the Christkindlmarket Des Moines at Principal Park and we’ll be happy to tell you all about it and give you a little sample. A few answers to the most frequently asked questions….
🎄What is it?- It’s a soft German gingerbread cookie.
🎄What makes these taste so good?- Would you believe these cookies have 17 different ingredients? Some of my favorites are the orange peel and the cardamom.
🎄Why do they take so long to make?- These cookies are a month long process! After they are baked they need to rest in covered boxes so that the flavors of ginger, cinnamon, cardamom, allspice, honey and candied orange peel can meld together. Also, the honey and orange peel will help the cookie soften as it rests. They are quite bland and a little on the dry side when they are right out of the oven. Still tasty but so much better with some time.
🎄Are you supposed to eat the “paper” on the bottom?-Yes!, that is an edible wafer paper called oblaten that I order from Germany every year. The Lebkuchen dough is dropped on top of the wafer before they are baked. I love the texture the oblaten adds and it just wouldn’t be Lebkuchen without it.
🎄How long will they be good for?- Months! This is hearty German food.😊 All of the cookies we sell will be good through Christmas and longer. They’re great for stocking stuffers and presents. True story… my son in law found a forgotten package in the Spring and gave them a try and thought they were still pretty great.
🎄🎄🎄I LOVE telling people all about our products. Please consider sharing this post- it helps my small business and also helps spread the word about this fabulous event happening right here in Des Moines. I’m surprised by how many people I talk to about this who have never heard of it. It is so much fun!! This will be the 10th year for the Christkindlmarket Des Moines 2025 . There’s so much delicious food (seriously, you can have several different meals there), artisan handcrafted items, a beer tent, singers and dancers, kids crafts, a Krampus parade and polka bands to name just some of the festive activities.
Hope to see you there!🎄
