Chances are, you’ve had a cup of coffee from F. Gaviña & Sons, Inc. But what you might not know about one of the nation’s largest family-owned coffee companies…is the passion behind the pour. Swipe to hear from Lisette Gaviña Lopez, CEO and 4th generation Gaviña coffee roaster, for the story that has been brewing for nearly 160 years.
Slide 1: “We are a coffee family that has dedicated our lives to the craft of sourcing, roasting and packing coffee. Coffee runs through our veins, and making great coffee is what we do to bring joy to the world. We are honored to have our brands in people’s homes.”
Slide 2: “This is Francisco Gaviña in the family coffee farm in the mountains of Trinidad, Cuba, where his family had been growing coffee since 1870. It was our grandfather’s dream to return to the coffee business in the U.S. after leaving behind the family’s coffee legacy in Cuba, fleeing as a political refugee.”
Slide 3: “Left to right is Don Francisco’s son, Jose, and granddaughter, Lisette Gaviña Lopez. Then Don Francisco’s son, Pedro, and grandson, Michael Gaviña inspecting green coffee at the family’s coffee roasting facility. We are a multi-generational, family-owned-and-operated business with the 3rd and 4th generation of Gaviña family members leading the business.”
Slide 4: “This is Don Francisco in the LA coffee roasting facility circa 1980s. Seen here ‘cupping’ coffee, tasting coffee for quality and inspecting green coffee. Francisco Gaviña, also known as Don Francisco, started roasting coffee again while catering to the Cuban community in Los Angeles, then custom-roasting coffee for other immigrant populations. Our company is the largest minority-owned coffee roaster in the United States.”
Slide 5: “Top: Grandson, Michael Gaviña in Nicaragua at the opening of a school the company funded. Bottom: La Chaparrala Wet Mill with delosAndes Cooperativa, the largest cooperative exporter for coffee growers in Colombia. We help support over 300 local and global organizations. We also invest in the coffee farming communities where we source our coffee, improving quality of life for farming families and helping to drive coffee sustainability for future generations.
