One of the Christian’s greatest responsibilities is to care for the poor. God has special concern for the poor, so from the very beginning he has commanded his people to look after them. His law in the Old Testament contained provisions to feed the poor and protect them from injustice. Jesus demanded even more, telling a rich man that he must sell his all his possessions and give to the poor in order to inherit eternal life (Luke 18:18-22). The early church’s concern for the poor was so strong that poverty was even eliminated within some communities by their willingness to share (Acts 2:44-45; 4:34-37; 6:1-6; 11:28-30; 24:17; cf. 5:1-11; 20:35).

References to the poor in the gospels include both the physically poor and the spiritually poor. Generations of Christians surely have erred in arguing, on the one hand, that “the poor” is a metaphor for our spiritual need, or, on the other hand, that gospel authors do not have in view the “spiritually poor.” Rather, it is because of God’s great gift of salvation to those who do not deserve it and can never earn it (the “spiritually poor”) that we ourselves should help those who are of no value to the world, who cannot repay us for what we do for them (Luke 14:12-14). Moreover, God will judge for their lack of compassion those who ignore the needs of the poor (Luke 16:19-31).

We strive to become the kind of church described in the Bible where the way of salvation is plainly taught and where there is relevant teaching for life, heart-felt worship, honest friendships and compassionate care for those in need. Please enjoy this site as you read what we preach and what we do. Our doors are always open and you are welcome to attend any of our churches.
