The Therapeutic Kitchen

The Therapeutic Kitchen These were the much feared ‘apprentice jobs’ that most children in our family are tasked to do. To me, a meal is more than a means to feed my family.

Wholesome, healthy home-made food - Tempeh fermented from organic buckwheat, black eyed beans, chana dal, etc; wholewheat soft sourdough bread, wholewheat low-sugar Banana Cake, pandan and gula Melaka kaya and various types of nut butter. Growing up in a family that prepares every ingredient from scratch, one cannot help but get infused with the idea that foods should be wholesome, natural and sea

soned with love and abour. I vividly remember pounding pandan leaves and squeezing them with bare hands to obtain the juices for my aunt to bake a pandan cake; grating tapioca and coconut for hours for my grandma to make tapioca cake; and tearing badly while cutting a big tray of onions, and then mincing them together with carrots, chestnuts and pork for my dad to make ngor hiang. And all these expereinces made me come to appreciate and understand the essence of real cooking. The care and attention that goes into every step of bringing out the best of different food ingredients that make up the distinctive taste of a dish. No machine, no fancy seasonings, no off-the-shelf ingredients, no shortcuts – only real, fresh foods and simply love . Fast forward a few decades; it is no wonder that this passion in wholesome foods and holistic living lands me in Dietetics and eventually a clinical dietitian. My training and practice as a dietitian grounded my passion in cooking with science and evidence-based healthy eating. And now with a lovely child and a gourmet husband on board, the need to provide healthy and yet delectable foods drives me to experiment and create new recipes for the family. It is a way of showing love, of nurturing mind and body, an opportunity of being mindfully present in myself in the whole process of cooking, and a tribute to my family tradition of living a real, authentic life. I believe the essence of healthy living is merely being present, to live simply, to love excessively, and to consume thoughtfully. It is this same life principle that drives me to invite you to share my labour of love, and passion in providing a slice of simplicity in the form of my humble homemade products.

We had extra chopped vegetables left from a meal, almond pulp left from making almond milk and some sourdough discard. So we mixed in some wholewheat flour and a bit of soy sauce to turn these ingredients into a vegetable pancake for our breakfast. Pan fried on a non-stick pan without oil. Paired the pancakes with our homemade whole food plant based almond paste as a dip at the side.

High protein, high fibre, no oil, no sugar, no waste and taste delicious!

Received a message from a customer that warmed up my heart. Not because they enjoyed our niangao, but because of her thoughtful gesture and generosity towards our friends that came all the way to work in Singapore.

At a time of uncertainty and turbulence, we may feel despair or anxiety, but never forget that we can feel love, care and hope too! Lets all share our care and warmth to the community, in order to add more positive energy to the world around us. Small act of kindness, a smile, a sincere greeting, a listening ear, or even a small treat can make someone's and our day a happier day!

I've translated the text as follows :

Hwee Mei, I just tried your Niangao today. Even my husband, who doesn't usually eat Niangao, said they were delicious, and my daughter loved them too! It just so happened that some workers and foremen came to my house today to do some installation work. They did a great job, so I offered them some. At first, they didn't want to eat them, but after one bite, they all said they were very happy. It tasted just like home, just like the food I had in India. They made a hand gesture to express their heartfelt gratitude. Seeing how happy they were, I fried one for them to take back and share with their friends! Thank you for making these lovingly prepared Niangao so that my family, my friends, and those of us far from home could all taste this love.

Dear friends, do you know that the second Wednesday of March is Dietitian's Day?

Some of you may be aware that The Therapeutic Kitchen is founded by a dietitian. This is why this year's Dietitian's Day gets extra meaningful for us, because we will be joining our fellow dietitians at Alexandra Hospital to celebrate the day on 10th March 2026 (Tuesday)!

We will be having a pop up from 11am to 2pm at the lobby of Cocoon, the newest building at Alexandra Hospital.

We will bring along our wholesome homemade products for sale at special prices that day. These include our signature Organic Buckwheat tempeh, 100% wholewheat multiseed bread, Soft sourdough bread, 100% wholewheat reduced sugar banana cake, vegan pumpkin kaya and natural seasonings, Shio Koji and Shoyu Koji.

The dietitians have also planned some very interesting activities for visitors to learn about how to incorporate healthy eating into daily life. There will also be a cooking demonstration by a celebrity chef!

Do join us at Cocoon at Alexandra Hospital this coming Tuesday, from 11am to 2pm to learn more about good nutrition and to bring home our healthy, wholesome homemade goodies!

Looking forward to seeing you!
