Long story but worth it 🥰
I made a challenging cake again, not because of the cake itself, but because of everything I went through while preparing it. This one really tested my patience to the point that I got so emotional.
Last week, my suki ordered a cake, and I accepted it without hesitation because she ordered early. But the day before I was supposed to bake, I received some bad news and had to bring my baby for a check-up. I messaged her and asked if I could cancel the order since I needed to prioritize my baby. She understood and told me to focus on my child first. She even said that if I still had time, she’d adjust her pickup from 11 AM to 5 PM just to give me more breathing room.
Fast forward to baking day.
I didn’t start early because my plan was to assemble the cake when my baby took his 9–10 AM nap. I made sure he was bathed and full so he’d sleep right away but 11 AM came and he still wasn’t asleep. I tried to give him milk and breastfeeding him, but it still didn’t work. So I decided to start assembling the cake and asked my mother-in-law to watch him.
Every time I needed to put the cake in the fridge, I’d go back to breastfeed him, hoping he’d fall asleep. When he didn’t, I fed him lunch, thinking maybe he was hungry. After that, I had to go back to put frosting on the cake, then return again to my baby to try to get him to nap so I could finish early.
My customer messaged me asking if she could pick up the cake at 3 PM. I told her honestly that I wasn’t sure if I could finish because my baby still wouldn’t sleep, but I’d try my best.
By 2 PM, he was still awake. I asked my MIL to watch him so I could start designing the cake. She brought him to our room upstairs so I could focus. I piped the designs while praying I wouldn’t make mistakes. I finished at 3:30 PM—30 minutes late—because I still needed to take pictures. But my suki was so kind. She said it was okay and she would still pick it up at 5 PM.
I felt so relieved and grateful for her understanding.
After everything, I asked my MIL to bring my baby down so I could feed him. And just seconds after drinking his milk and breastfeeding, he finally closed his eyes and slept so peacefully. It felt like he had been waiting for me to finish before he let himself rest.
This experience gave me even bigger respect for all working moms and full-time mothers who take care of their children while doing everything else at home. It’s not easy—juggling responsibilities, emotions, and our babies’ needs. A huge salute and so much respect to all of them, especially to single mothers. ❤️
