𝙀𝙙𝙪𝙠𝙖𝙨𝙮𝙤𝙣. 𝙀𝙙𝙪𝙠𝙖𝙨𝙮𝙤𝙣, 𝙠𝙖𝙧𝙖𝙥𝙖𝙩𝙖𝙣 𝙣𝙜 𝙢𝙖𝙢𝙖𝙢𝙖𝙮𝙖𝙣!
𝙆𝙖𝙡𝙪𝙨𝙪𝙜𝙖𝙣, 𝙠𝙖𝙧𝙖𝙥𝙖𝙩𝙖𝙣 𝙣𝙜 𝙢𝙖𝙢𝙖𝙢𝙖𝙮𝙖𝙣!

In an interview with the UP Diliman (UPD) Alumni Relations, Munimuni band members Adj Jiao (vocalist, songwriter), Owen Castro (flutist, vocalist, songwriter), Josh Tumaliuan (drummer), and Jolo Ferrer (bassist) detailed how the University amplified the band’s confidence in creating and performing their original Filipino music.

Adj finished his bachelor's degree from the UPD College of Education and his master’s degree from the College of Social Sciences and Philosophy. Owen graduated from the College of Music. Meanwhile, Josh and Jolo are from the College of Music and College of Human Kinetics (CHK), respectively.

Munimuni was formed in 2013 by TJ de Ocampo and Adj, bonded by a shared taste in music. Although TJ and Red Calayan (original drummer) have since parted ways with the band, their vision for the band’s identity remains fim—to provide comfort, hope, and relatability through their songs.

The members admit feeling elated whenever listeners express appreciation and admiration for their music, as it validates the sincerity poured into their work.

Similar to the intricacy of finding the perfect words for their songs, the band’s journey was also fraught with hardships. Undeterred, they used these challenges to strengthen their harmony as a band—facing every obstacle together.

Josh shared his observation about the challenge of establishing the band’s worth in its early stages. He wondered whether valuing their craft deeply would make listeners do the same, especially in the Philippines, where pursuing an artistic path is not often considered ideal. “May pera ba diyan?,” he said. Parang ‘yung paano mo i-value, ma-vavalue nga ba talaga iyon?,” he expounded.

Adj then explained that they essentially operate as a small business. While earning a living is important, it is not their primary motivation for making music. Instead, producing songs is more like an outlet of their emotions, where they can always stay true to themselves.

It’s our way. Sabi nga ni Owen, ‘Hindi namin ‘to ginagawa for that reason, iyong pagsulat ng kanta,’ kaya na-appreciate namin iyong mga tao na parang ‘huy, open sila to listen’ siguro nung naging mas for lack of better term naging serious with music iyong band by 2018,” he said.

Sticking to the band’s principles makes them value the constant support from the UP community even more. They highlighted that the community’s openness and appreciation to all artists, famous or not, is unparalleled, making their performances, especially in 𝘜𝘗 𝘍𝘢𝘪𝘳, extra special.

“Siguro that time iyon ‘yung biggest na show na nagawa ko eh. Sobrang overwhelmed ako noong naalala ko. Sobrang daming tao,” Josh shared. “I think for the band also nong time na iyon, parang that’s the biggest yet,” Owen added.

They acknowledged that their exposure at 𝘜𝘗 𝘍𝘢𝘪𝘳 ultimately opened doors to larger local and international festivals. Apart from performing on campus and other renowned universities like the University of Santo Tomas and Far Eastern University, Munimuni had the opportunity to perform at 𝘓𝘶𝘤𝘧𝘦𝘴𝘵 2023 in Taiwan and 𝘈𝘹𝘦𝘢𝘯 𝘍𝘦𝘴𝘵𝘪𝘷𝘢𝘭 2024 in Bali, Indonesia.

“UP Fair indirectly or directly, baka may nakapanood sa’yo, nag-fefeed siya ng next gigs mo, ganon iyong effect niya, hindi lang kami sa UP Fair nakatugtog,” Adj said.

When asked about their favorite song, they unanimously agreed that it is currently 𝘔𝘢𝘳𝘪𝘭𝘢𝘨 as it encapsulates the band’s primary theme. “It speaks about hope na meron—that it exists basically. Iyon ‘yong pinepresent nung kanta, na nag-eexist iyong pag-asa, and usually ine-end namin iyong mga set namin ‘pag tumutugtog kami with that song kasi iyon ‘yung message na gusto namin ibigay,” Adj expounded.

The band also credited other University experiences and mentors for intensifying their passion and shaping their attitude as performers.

Jolo, a former student-athlete, expressed his gratitude to Assistant Professor Ralph Ramos of the CHK. “I can say na na-build niya rin iyong confidence ko through fencing no’ng player pa ako dito, and nadala ko rin iyon siguro sa confidence ko kung nasa stage ako,” he said.

Josh and Owen thanked their former CMu professors, who not only taught them vital musical skills, but also imparted a deeper understanding of the music field’s complexities. Adj, meanwhile, reminisced about his time in Yakal Residence Hall, a place that gave him chances to perform his originally composed songs during dorm events.

Before concluding the interview, the band encouraged young artists who wish to pursue music to never forget finding their reasons, never get scared of pursuing their dreams, and never get tired of trying. Bumpy roads may test their patience, but holding firm core beliefs for themselves and for their craft will always keep them on track.

Munimuni now looks forward to completing new singles, hoping to release them by the end of the year.
