THE ORIGINS OF SIMBANG GABI

December 16 to 24, Filipinos from all walks of life make an effort to wake up every dawn to attend the novena masses which start as early as 4 a.m. to pray to God for a healthy life, successful career, stronger family ties, among others. This tradition is called, 'Simbang Gabi' or Aguinaldo masses. But did you know that it was actually Pope Sixtus V who decreed that the dawn masses be held in the Philippines every 16th of December?

That was way back 16th century. The practice originated in Mexico when Fray Diego de Soria, prior of the Convent of San Agustin Acolman, sought permission from the pope to hold Christmas masses for the farmers who wake up very early to work.
