BREAKING: “Benin Coup Fails — President Talon Safe, Army Regains Grip After TV Coup Bid”
The office of the presidency in Patrice Talon has announced that he remains safe and that the regular armed forces are reasserting control after a dramatic coup attempt in the Republic of Benin.
On Sunday morning, a faction of military officers appeared on national television claiming to have deposed the government — calling themselves the Military Committee for Refoundation, they declared the dissolution of the president and all state institutions.
But in an official statement, the presidency dismissed the coup as the action of “a small group” controlling only the state broadcaster, while affirming that the regular army has regained control over the capital and the rest of the country, declaring that “the city and the country are completely secure.”
This attempted coup comes just days after another military takeover in West Africa — in Guinea-Bissau — adding to growing regional instability.
More updates to follow as the situation develops.
