U.S. cafés were already contending with high prices and short supplies of the tea powder. New tariffs on Japanese imports are another hurdle.

Matcha’s explosive popularity, driven largely by TikTok and Western health trends, has created a global supply shortage.

Matcha is a finely ground powder of specially grown and processed green tea leaves, primarily from Japan. It’s known for its vibrant green color, rich, umami flavor.

Major Japanese companies like Ippodo and Marukyu Koyamaen have limited sales due to overwhelming demand.

Despite matcha representing only 6% of Japanese tea production, the market is expected to reach $5 billion by 2028.

Japan’s record 36.9 million tourists in 2024 worsened shortages. Kyoto’s hot, dry harvest season reduced yields while Tencha prices rose 1.7 times higher than last year, reaching 8,235 yen per kilogram. Supply constraints are expected to continue indefinitely.
