Indulge in these golden, flaky cheese scones—the ultimate proof that savory comfort food can be wholesome!

By making these at home, you're in total control of the ingredients, cutting out the hidden preservatives and excess salt found in store-bought versions. These scones are naturally low in sugar and packed with protein and calcium.

Easy Cheese Scones Recipe (serves 6)

Ingredients:
260g plain flour
3tsp baking powder, leveled
1/2tsp salt
100g cold unsalted butter, cut into small cubes
150g grated cheese or cheddar Cheese
180ml buttermilk (165ml liquid milk + 15ml white vinegar/lemon juice)
Liquid milk and grated cheese for topping
Melted butter for glazing

Optional Add-ons:
1/2tsp garlic powder (for better taste)
Chopped halaal-safe chicken ham and green onion chives

Instructions:
1. Pre-heat the oven to 200°C.
2. Sift the plain flour, baking powder and salt. Pour the flour mixture into a food processor and pulse it all together.
3. Add in cold butter to the food processor and pulse it four times. (x4)
4. Add in the grated cheese and pulse it once. (x1)
5. Add in the buttermilk and pulse the mixture for about 10 times. (x10)
6. Shape into an approximately 3cm thick disc and cut into 6 wedges. Brush each of the wedges with milk and grated cheese.
7. Bake for 20 mins and allow to rest for 5 mins after baking.
8. Glaze the hot and cheesy scones with some melted butter.

Notes:

1. Food processor: Use a food processor with a normal S shaped blade.
2. Cheese: Use any good quality melting cheese or cheddar for optimal taste. Best one in the local mauritian market remains Kraft Cheese from BrandActiv or Bega Cheese from Panagora
3. Flour: Best to use plain flour with added baking powder instead of self raising flour to ensure optimal rise in the oven along with taste, flavour and lifespan of the scones.
4. Leftovers can be kept in an airtight container for 3-4 days maximum even though it is best when eaten warm.
