*HYDROVICTORIA FISH HATCHERY FARM*
Hydro Victoria Fish Hatchery Farm, is located along the shores of Lake Victoria,in Budalangi, Busia County.
The Business is 4 years old(started off in 2017), has 100 fish cages in Lake Victoria spread between Port Victoria in Busia and Usenge Siaya County, with a hatchery consisting of 40 fish ponds, a RAS system from the Netherlands.
Recently, in July 2020 the farm was selected as top 49 out of 2000 applicants, as an Agribiz Early stage Enterprise and signed a 12 month Agreement with Kenya Climate Innovation Center a subsidiary of Kenya Climate Ventures funded by EU and DANIDA. The agreement will see the business get Business Advisory Support, Capacity building, Facilitation on access Financial Linkages.
Currently the farm has capacity to produce 50,000 fingerlings per Month (30,000 Tilapia and 20,000 catfish) and this is poised to be scaled up to 100,000 fingerlings per month from january 2021 as per ongoing expansion plans. Each fingerling is sold to cage fish and pond fish farmers for an amount between 4-10/- depending on fish growth size.
To cut down on the production costs, the farm has ordered a 30Kg/Hour Dry type Fish Extruder Machine from Amisy Trading Company in China. This will see local feed production from inputs such as Maize jam from Teso area, Rice jam from Bunyala rice scheme, Omena(dagaa)/Fresh water shrimps from Lake Victoria, Soya cake from Uganda. The farm has also started growth of black soldier fly larvae as an alternate source of protein and the production is poised to grow based on-going to community-level contracted farming, where women and youths will benefit from the supply of larvae for the feed plant
