one of the creators at in Banjara hills, walks into the Pottery studio one day asking me to make pots for their then soon to open pastry cafe.

Now, it didn't take me long to agree to make pots because they;

1. Understood HANDMADE pottery.

2. Understood Glazes (which means they DIDN'T want a "certain blue" one sees on a diving trip to the bottom of the ocean, on a tiny fish!)

3. Above all understood the nonuniformity that comes with handmade products.

So much so that, Chaitali and (co-founder) both worked on some of their pastry sizes keeping the ceramic plates in mind.

Was fun making pots for the "pastry chefs", who quit their day jobs and followed their passion for baking.

A few years ago, Ray (my teacher) handed me the drawings of a 24*32*36INCH Chamber Wood-fired kiln and I drafted the same on AutoCAD hoping to build one for myself someday; still hoping.

The last 12 days have been about bringing those drawings to life.
A very humbling experience working with brick and mortar and to think that a few thousand pots will make transformation inside it. The hills added the extra charm to the entire experience.

The kiln is built for a Pottery Trust in Kodaikanal, which supports the neighbouring underprivileged children with their health and education.

POLLICHATHU SHALLOW DISH | Stoneware Ceramics | 6 X 2.5 inches, Oxidation fired to Cone 8.

Most forms I make in clay are an aftermath of my own experiences, paraphernalia and the people in my life.

One such form is inspired from the most delish Fish Coriander Pollichathu I savoured a few weeks ago in Fort Kochi, Kerala. I was struck by the simplicity of the bowl and the dish itself. The steamed fish came wrapped in a banana leaf with honest, simple local ingredients. A perfect reflection of local culture and optimal usage of local spices and environment. Did I mention local?
Pollichathu so good it deserved a pot made and named after it.
My take on it 🐟 🍽️
