Making the Table Bigger – My Story in Every Woman Magazine!

I'm so excited to share something a little different with you today!

I've had the absolute pleasure of being featured in Every Woman Magazine, with an interview titled "Making the Table Bigger."

This interview gave me the opportunity to reflect on my journey, from my childhood spent baking with my grandparents, through 16 years working at Citizens Advice, to making the difficult decision to walk away from a career I loved and build something new.

And, of course, how Owlsome Cakes came to be. 🦉🎂

But reading the article back, something really stood out to me.

Although my career has changed dramatically, perhaps I haven't changed quite as much as I thought.

I've always been passionate about bringing people together, challenging inequality and making sure nobody feels excluded.

These days, I just happen to do it through cake! 🍰

One of my favourite things I shared in the interview was:

💬 "True inclusion isn't about taking someone's seat. It's about making the table bigger."

And that really does sum up everything I'm trying to achieve.

I also opened up about some of the challenges along the way, the moments of self-doubt, what motivates me and why winning Bronze at the Best British Cake Awards meant so much more than simply receiving an award.

It's quite a personal interview, and I'll admit that putting so much of myself out there feels a little daunting! But if my experiences encourage even one person to believe in themselves, take that next step or realise they deserve a seat at the table too, then it's worth it. ❤️

I've shown you quite a LOT of cake this week. But looking back through these orders, something struck me.

They couldn't really be more different.

From a book launch, seven-year-old who loves Sonic, a child's first days at school, Pac-Man nostalgia, a favourite Jellycat, Even someone's favourite McDonald's meal plus many many more!

But there's one thing connecting every single one.

A person.

That's what bespoke cake means to me. It's not choosing Cake A from a catalogue and changing the colour. It's finding out who we're celebrating.

What do they love? What makes them laugh? What's important to them? Who needs to be able to eat the cake? And how can we turn all of that into something sitting in the middle of their table?

Sometimes it's elegant.
Sometimes it's sentimental.
Sometimes it's a tiny fondant portion of fries.
But it should always feel like them.

That's the part of cake making I don't think I'll ever get bored of.

🎂 Apparently I've been so busy MAKING cakes that I forgot to actually show you the cakes…

So consider this your official Owlsome Cake Dump. 😂 A little snapshot of what's been leaving my kitchen recently…

Looking through them together has actually reminded me how wonderfully different my orders can be. No two weeks look quite the same. And I wouldn't have it any other way. ❤️

🛍️🐰🍟 A shopping bag, a Jellycat bunny and a favourite McDonald's meal walk into a bakery...

No, this isn't the beginning of a joke.

It's genuinely been part of my recent cupcake decorating list. 😂

And I LOVED IT.

I was asked to create cupcakes featuring lots of completely different things that meant something to the recipient. And that's when bespoke cakes become particularly fun. Instead of every cupcake being identical, each one became its own little challenge.

A shopping bag, A favourite meal, A favourite little bunny.

Different interests.

Different memories.

Different tiny details.

All brought together in one box. 🧁❤️

Were some of them slightly fiddly?

Absolutely.

Did I question why I'd agreed to make tiny versions of things at various points?

Also absolutely. 😂

Would I do it again?

100%.

Because personalised doesn't have to mean putting someone's name on a cake. Sometimes it's about looking at the finished box and immediately knowing:

"These were made for ME."

And that's pretty special.

Now I want to test my skills…

👾🎂 WAKA WAKA WAKA… (and no it's not Fozzy Bear)

Anyone else suddenly hearing a very familiar sound? 😂

Another recent creation from the Owlsome kitchen…

PAC-MAN!

I absolutely love when someone gives me a theme that instantly gets my brain thinking about all the little details I can incorporate.

And there's something particularly fun about recreating something so instantly recognisable in cake. But what do I include? -

🟡 Pac-Man?
👻 Ghosts?
🔵 The Maze itself?
🎮 But most certainly; A healthy dose of nostalgia

We went for a simple Pac-Man as the customer didn't want too much detail and frosting on the cake.

The only problem is that making this one left me wanting to find an arcade machine. 😂

So let's settle something…

✏️🍎 Sometimes the milestones that deserve celebrating aren't birthdays.

First day of school, First day in Reception, Moving up a year, Starting high school.

Putting on that uniform that somehow looked FAR too big when you bought it. 🥹

They're ordinary days on the calendar…

but enormous days in a child's life.

Recently I was asked to make these Back to School cupcakes to mark one of those special moments.

And I absolutely loved the idea.

We often save cake for birthdays, weddings and anniversaries, but I'm a firm believer that life's smaller milestones deserve celebrating too.

Because one day you'll look back at the photograph of that little person standing at the front door in their oversized uniform and wonder where the time went. ❤️

So yes…

Have the cupcake.

💙💨 You've got to go fast when there's a 7th birthday to celebrate!

One of my recent birthday cakes was for a very important customer turning SEVEN…

…and there was only one theme required.

SONIC! 💙

Children's cakes are some of my favourites to create because their interests become such a huge part of their little worlds.

Whether it's Sonic, dinosaurs, unicorns, Pokémon or something completely unexpected, I love taking that obsession and turning it into their birthday cake.

Because when you're seven, your birthday cake isn't just dessert.

It's a BIG deal. 🎂😂

And I think birthdays should feel every bit as exciting as that.

Mine would have been probably (and I had to rack my brain here) Polly Pocket or my little pony! (I'm sure mum will correct me) 👇

📚✨ When a book becomes cake…

This was definitely one of those projects where I got to let my imagination run away with me!

I was asked to create the cakes for the launch of Realms, and rather than simply making a selection of pretty cupcakes, I wanted the cakes to feel as though they actually belonged in the world of the book.

So there was quite a bit of brainstorming involved!

I worked through the story, themes and ideas from the book, bounced lots of ideas backwards and forwards — including more than a few conversations with ChatGPT helping me develop and refine the concepts! 😂 — and gradually we created a whole collection of cakes designed specifically to complement the book and its launch.

Then came the slightly nerve-racking part…

Would everyone actually like them?!

Thankfully, the answer was a VERY definite yes. ❤️

The cakes went down an absolute storm and I received so many lovely comments on the day.

Thank you to everyone who came over, tried one, told me which was their favourite or simply took the time to say something lovely about them.

It genuinely meant so much.

This is one of the things I love most about bespoke baking. Sometimes I'm not simply being asked to make "60 cupcakes".

I'm being given a story, an idea or a feeling…

…and asked to turn it into cake.

And I absolutely LOVE that challenge. 📚🧁✨
