Public Statement on the Government’s Plans to Dismantle Healthwatch Independence

We are deeply concerned by the Government’s plans to dismantle Healthwatch as an independent champion for patients, as reported in national media and confirmed by Healthwatch England
For over twelve years, Healthwatch has given a powerful voice to patients and families, helping to expose failures, highlight poor care, and push for improvements across health and social care. By proposing to bring these functions ‘in-house’ under local authorities and NHS bodies, the Government is removing a critical layer of independent scrutiny and accountability.

This change risks silencing the very people who most need to be heard — patients, carers and communities. It risks poor care going unchallenged, complaints being buried, and vulnerable people losing a trusted ally.

We call on all local decision-makers, including MPs and councillors, to stand up for the principle that patients must have an independent voice. Healthwatch was set up in the wake of scandals like Mid Staffordshire to prevent avoidable harm. We must not go backwards.

We will continue to speak up, share people’s experiences, and campaign for a health and care system that puts patients first — with genuine, independent scrutiny at its heart.
