Our 24 Days of Giving -2025

Our 24 Days of Giving -2025 This year for the 11th year running, we will be turning December in to our “24 days of giving" We turn December in to 24 days of giving. Firstly. . . .

In 2015 we started a tradition which has now become as much a part of our build up to Christmas as putting up a tree, eating too much and singing along to Fairytale of New York! Each day we go somewhere in Northamptonshire to spread some cheer and show people that they are appreciated. What we give depends on who we visit and what we think they will appreciate receiving. We have 2 parts to how we

do things. We make up refreshments boxes for counselling services, support groups, voluntary organisations and hospices. We donate to the counties food banks. We bake cakes and mince pies for the residents and staff in care homes and homeless shelters. We take animal food, bedding and treats to animal sanctuaries and rescue shelters. We donate toys, books, games and craft supplies to toddler groups, and after school and youth clubs. We have supported The Samaritans, domestic abuse services and refuge and The Northamptonshire Health Charity. Secondly. . . . We have what we call Heroes for Heroes. This is where we take Tubs of Cadbury’s heroes to thank people/groups for being real life Heroes. For this Reece and Maddie make a list of who they think should get a thank you for being a Hero. So far we have included all of our emergency services, road sweepers, library staff, refuse collectors, NHS staff and many more. For each day we take photos of what we are doing and aim to post them here on our page between 7-8pm. We show you where we went in the county, who we visited and what we gave. If it’s a service, charity or an organisation that could be of help or interest to our followers we will include information about what they do and if appropriate their contact details too. Our very first day of giving was on 1st December 2015 when we took our first refreshments box to Cransley Hospice. The last one was on 26th December 2024 when we did a thank you to the Wellie Wombles. In total so far we have spent 255 December days out in the county giving to people! We are all really happy with that, and very pleased that we have been able to do it. We have met some really lovely people along the way and will always be glad that we do this. During covid, due to us shielding Aaron who is medically vulnerable we thought we might have to stop. We sat and talked it through and soon realised that all of us wanted to find a way to be able to carry on and complete our 24 days of giving 2020. We knew we couldn’t do things the way we normally do so we tweaked it a little and pushed on. We decided to concentrate mostly on the Thank You’s. So we focused on an individual that we could visit with some heroes to recognise what they do personally and as a representative of all who do the same job. We included young carers, paid carers, and informal carers. Those working in the NHS, retail, logistics, schools, public services and many more. In the beginning we provided everything we gave ourselves. We still buy a lot of what we give, but in the last few years we have been really lucky to have received some help. Some local shops have donated to us which has been a real help. Some of our friends have also helped us in the last couple of years which we are very grateful for. Either by donating food for the food banks, gifts for us to pass on to others or by donating some money to fund some Cadbury’s heroes. This has been amazing. We really are grateful for every bit of help and support that we receive, it's amazing! This year we will be doing it all over again and we can't wait! If you can think of a service, group, charity or organisation in Northamptonshire which you think we should make a delivery to please send us a message. If you haven’t already, Please like our page and follow us to see where we end up and who we meet. Maybe even share our posts if you think it might make someone smile, or invite others to like our page too. Maddie, Reece and Aaron love seeing that people are following, liking posts and leaving comments. We thank you all for your support and hope you will be with us this December for our 11th 24 days of giving! Thank you all for supporting us! Maddie, Reece, Aaron, Ruth & Sarah

We managed to make one last delivery of Heroes to real life Heroes before 2025 comes to an end!

Nene Valley Community First Responders (CFRs) are trained volunteers supporting East Midlands Ambulance Service (EMAS) by responding to 999 calls in their local area, arriving faster than ambulances to provide immediate, life-saving care like CPR, defibrillation, and stabilizing patients during those critical first minutes.

They are specially trained volunteers who give up their time to help their community. They are community based working in their own neighbourhoods and are despatched by by the same control centres as ambulances. They are funded by donations and fundraising to cover equipment, uniforms and running costs. They are an amazing group of people who are making a huge difference in their communities.

We went to visit them and their EMAS colleagues at Wellingborough ambulance station. We showed appreciation for what they do and gave them some Heroes for being real Heroes.

Christmas Day - The UNICEF Inspired Gift.

This year we decided that Maddie, Reece and Aaron would be the recipients of our UNICEF gift. For 11 Decembers now they have given so much of their time going all over the county doing things to make other people feel appreciated, we thought it was time for them to feel that too.❤️

This years UNICEF inspired gift is “an emergency shelter for a family”
The first they knew about it was when we sat themdown and told them that we have one more video to make. We wrote notes on the bottom of their tubs of Heroes and got them to read them out. They weren’t expecting this at all! 👏

We gave them heroes for being our very own trio of heroes!
(Aaron’s tub is full of white chocolate coins though as he doesn’t eat Heroes) 😊

Day 24 of our 24 days of giving……

We give you Baby Basics Northampton, who provide newborn baby starter packs for those in need right across the county. They are an amazing charity who really do make a huge difference. In fact during this year they have provided a whopping 556 starter packs.

They are needed more and more, but donations have dropped over time. If you have baby clothes 0-3 months that your baby has outgrown or a Moses basket they no longer need, please consider donating to Baby Basics. You will find a list of donation collection points on their page, or you can drop us a message and we are happy to collect from you and pass them on.

“”Baby Basics Northampton is a volunteer-led charity dedicated to supporting new parents and newborns in vulnerable situations. The charity provides moses baskets filled with essential items to mothers and families who are struggling to cope with the financial and practical challenges of caring for a new baby.

Working with midwives, health visitors and other professional groups to provide support directly where it is most needed, Baby Basics Northampton volunteers lovingly collect, sort and package up moses baskets of clothing, toiletries and essential baby equipment.

We rely on donations of pre-loved, good condition baby items including clothes up to 3 months in age, towels, bedding, new and unopened toiletries such as breast pads, toothbrushes, shampoo and nappies etc.”” (this is the intro we took from The Baby Basics Northampton website- they write it much better than we would!)

We were able to spend a few weeks buying different bundles of clothes before December ready to donate. We were also very lucky to have help with this donation.

The photo of a big bag of clothes and a baby bath were donated to us by the ladies at Northamptonshire County Toy Library to pass on. We also had a cash donation from Jen Johnstone-Edwards which paid for the first bundle of clothes which started us off nicely.
Then we also had a cash donation from Trina Rachel when we thought we were done, so we were able to go and buy some cardigans that Baby Basics told us they particularly needed.
So a massive thank you to those four lovely ladies for helping us provide even more for such a good cause!

Day 23 of our 24 days of giving……part 2….

We had a lovely trip to Towcester to visit Renew 169 well being cafe.
What a lovely friendly and welcoming place we found there.

It is a safe space where there are groups going on but also a place to sit and have a cuppa and a chat, or sit peacefully having some you time. Everyone is welcomed, with an aim to reduce loneliness and isolation within the community. The people are friendly, the place has a great atmosphere and the volunteers are fab..(Thank you to Jan in the cafe for taking care of Ruth when she had a blip 🙏)

We took them a refreshments box to make use of in the cafe.
We also took them some hand made felt crafted gingerbread people that were donated by Fern and Fable in Irchester.
Lastly, Maddie and Reece made some pocket hugs with positive words to give them too.

You can find out more about what they do and what the provide to the community on their page>>>>>>renew169 Wellbeing Café

Day 23 of our 24 days of giving…part 1…

When we put together our list for this years Heroes visits Maddie wanted to make sure that we visited library staff. When Reece found out that a lot of libraries are now staffed by volunteers he was just as keen!

So we recently took some Heroes to Irchester library to show appreciation to the volunteers there.

We also took them a refreshments box to use with their groups. On the day we visited there was a crafty chat group coming in. There are lots of things going on at our community libraries and you can find out more about Irchester library on their page >>>>> Irchester Community Library

Day 22 of our 24 days of giving. . . Part 2….

NDAS (Northamptonshire Domestic Abuse Service) is a really important service that provides help and support for Northamptonshire people who have experienced domestic abuse in some way. They help anyone affected, regardless of gender, age ,ethnicity, sexuality or anything else that makes us the individuals that we are.

We wanted to thank them for all they do, so we met up with the lovely Chloe from NDAS and gave her some Heroes. This was particularly special as Aaron and Chloe have known each other since they were children. Thank you Chloe and team NDAS!

This is a personal and important one for us.
There are 5 of us doing our 24 days of giving.
3 of us are survivors of abuse and have been through therapy to rebuild our lives and ourselves.
2 of us had police involvement.

We have all experienced the effects of living with domestic abuse.

So we understand what important work team NDAS does for the people who need them. Having a safe place with understanding people to turn to not only makes it easier for some, it is life saving for others.
Whether you just want to know a little more about them, think they may be able to support you, or someone you know, or you could help them with fundraising or anything else, you can find out more about NDAS here >>>

Day 22 of our 24 days of giving…Part 1…..

This time of year can be lovely and full of family, friends and good times. A time of celebration and happiness. But sometimes if you have things on your mind, you are struggling with your thoughts, or you are feeling overwhelmed, anxious or alone those feelings can feel magnified. We are fortunate to have a number of cris cafes in Northamptonshire to provide somewhere to drop in and talk things through when we need to. No need to call ahead or book in, it’s a drop in where all adults are welcome.

We recently went to the Northampton Crisis cafe and gave them a refreshments box. It’s a very welcoming space with lovely people who are there to listen. We think they do an amazing job.

We have included a pic of their usual opening times with locations, and what the times are over the Christmas period.

We will put a link to a video made by the Corby crisis cafe in the comments as it’s also relevant in all of them.

Day 21 of our 24 days of giving…. (Part 2)

This is another first for us.
We have never given Heroesto an individual before.
When we were working on this years list of recipients we were approached by someone who was very keen to nominate this individual person. Listening to the passion behind the words of this nomination we knew we were going to take this one on even though it’s an individual person. We agreed that she really deserved it.

So we recently went over to Blisworth to meet up with the very lovely Tish and gave her some Heroes being so kind, generous and caring.
Tish dedicates a great deal of time, effort and passion in to fundraising for the charity Help for Heroes. She also supports those that she meets during her Help for Heroes work. In fact she is pretty much supportive to anyone that needs it.

Let us share with you some of the things that we were told about Tish.

Day 21 of our 24 days of giving. . .(part 1)

Yesterday we went to the headlands in Northampton to visit Shop Zero / Foodkind community shop. This is a really good scheme to help reduce food waste. They receive donations of food from supermarkets and wholesalers that are towards the end of their life and sell them at the food hub at a fraction of the original price. All of this food would otherwise have gone to landfill. So by shopping here you are doing your bit to save perfectly good food from going to waste. The bonus is also that you are getting food items at a fract of what we normally pay.

Items are priced in units, most are 1 unit but expensive items may be more than that (they are normally written on the packaging). You get 15 units for £5. They also have when available freezer bags 15 unit - vegan, veggie and mixed (meat & other items such as ready meals, pizzas etc.

You don’t have to add up units and make sure you you get the right units etc. you can go in an buy just a couple of things that are just a few units or come out with lots of bags full. The volunteers will work out your units and cost at the till. They are so good!

We did some shopping yesterday and have included to our post a pic of what we bought. We added in a poinsettia plant which was one of the more expensive items. Our total for our shopping was £13.

They are extending their opening hours on Christmas Eve and will be open for 9 hours as they will have a lot of food. Fresh vegetables and Christmas goodies as well as staples. So before Christmas you have two opportunities to visit Tuesday and Christmas Eve.

They are run by volunteers, so we took them some Heroes to show appreciation for what they do. We also took them a lot of carrier bags.

For further details please have a look at their page >>> Shop Zero

Day 20 of our 24 days of giving….(part 2😊)

This one is a little different for us, it’s the first time we have visited a business to say a thank you with some Heroes. As you know we usually visit charities , services, community groups and so on. But this one has really caught our eye and impressed us so much that we decided that there is a first time for everything. So we went to see them with some Heroes. When we got there we met some genuinely lovely people who were an absolute pleasure to chat to. Although they are a business they go above and beyond for the community and do it just because they care.

We are talking about the lovely people at O’Neills Cafe in Corby.
This is a cafe on the Danesholme estate, near the shops and school. The staff are really friendly and the cafe is very welcoming.
They have community groups using the place like an art and craft wellbeing group, and carers and the people they care for. Tackling isolation and encouraging community involvement and engagement. The bit that got us most though is toast! Toast is such a simple thing, but in this case it’s important. The owners of O’Neills provide free toast to any child each week day morning that they are open for free! Yes, Free! No purchase of anything else required to get it, no adult needed, just free toast to any child that goes in before school and asks for it. Whether o their own or with friends, they all get some free toast. There are no 30-40 kids eating for free before school. We think that definitely deserves some Heroes, some recognition and a Thank You!

You can find out more about the cafe here >>> O’Neills Cafe

Day 20 of our 24 days of giving… (part 1 )

We recently visited a charity that offers support to people all over Northamptonshire who are affected by someone else’s addiction.
Addiction doesn’t just affect the individual but also their loved ones. Family Support Link is there to offer support. Whether it’s children, partners, parents or anyone else who is affected, they are there to help.

We went to see them at their base in Wellingborough but they cover the whole county. We took a refreshments box to help the staff while they were extra busy with their Christmas appeal getting their own deliveries ready to go out to families. This box was full of items donated to us which was lovely. We also used their Amazon wish list to get some children’s gifts for their appeal. Maddie, Reece and Aaron each donated a gift from the list.

You can find out more about the important work they do on their page >>> Family Support Link

Day 19 of our 24 days of giving. . . .

Today we have a big Thank You to all the amazing people at East Midlands Ambulance Service.

They do such an important and incredible job each and every day. We literally wouldn’t have our Aaron with us now if it wasn’t for so many members of team EMAS. They have saved his life more times than we can remember.

We went to visit Corby Ambulance Station. We took them some Heroes to go with our Thank You for being real life Heroes. We also took them some mince pies, cupcakes and brownies that we made for them.

The EMAS page has lots of helpful information and you can take a look here >>> East Midlands Ambulance Service
