ETA Subsea Cable Specialists

ETA Subsea Cable Specialists ETA Subsea Cable Specialists support marine projects worldwide, with a focus on energy and telecom s Our service is responsive, flexible and cost effective.

ETA was formed in 1995 to provide specialist services to the submarine cable industry. Our marine project expertise is now applied across the telecom, power, marine renewables and oil and gas markets. We provide independent, high quality project management, technical and QA services to a broad spectrum of developers and contractors, and specialise in niche products built to meet particular project

challenges including adverse installation conditions and tight timescales. Assignments range from task-specific support of established marine companies to the provision of a complete 'turnkey' services to clients new to the marine construction sector. We are proud to have been awarded the Queens Award for Enterprise in 2014 for International Trade supplying subsea cable expertise and services across the globe, as well as being FPAL Registered, Sellihca qualified, as well as ISO 9001 and UKAS Management Systems accredited.

We've been busy the past few months engineering, constructing and delivering 12 of our innovative dry-mate connectors for the expansion of École Centrale de Nantes' SEM-REV test site. The past month has seen our service team pre-fitting the connectors to cables onshore, completion of onshore SAT, and the first phase of marine works.

Last but not least in our cable recovery series, our smallest recovery tool is the cable gripper. The cable gripper, otherwise known as the ‘cable magnet’ is designed to be deployed on the cable with an ROV. This tool requires no hydraulic or electrical input from the ROV. The ROV simply hooks the gripper with attached recovery line on to the cable using its manipulator arm. The cable is captured by a pair of spring loaded cams at the base of the gripper. The gripper with attached cable may then be recovered to deck. During recovery a force-multiplying mechanism increases the grip force as the cable is recovered. Factory and field trials have demonstrated safe recovery from seabed, over the sheave and to deck.

The largest of our trilogy of cable grapnels, the ‘Tiger’ Grapnel is designed for recovery from deeper burial depths. This is a proven product with modular design and is supplied with a transport and storage stand. Like our wheeled detrencher, the Tiger can be fitted with interchangeable flukes for burial depths of up to 2m, and up to 3m. The operating geometry of grapnels require that the tool have a long shank which can cause handling difficulties. To optimise handling and minimise storage space, the grapnel has a telescopic shank which can be set according to the fluke size / pe*******on depth required, thus optimising handling. Due to the size of the grapnel, it is fitted with skids which run on the seabed instead of wheels. A shear pin mechanism will allow the fluke to hinge back and release the grapnel at high tow loads if it is snagged on the seabed. A sensor and acoustic telemetry package can be fitted to enable monitoring of pitch and roll (within preset ranges). The same package, with a different sensor, can be used to confirm cable capture.

Although 3m is currently the deepest recovery depth we have designed for, if you have a deeper recovery requirement, we will be pleased to discuss and develop a solution for you.

Adding to our post on the cut and hold grapnel, our robust wheeled detrenching grapnel (DTG) is in service in the cable fleets of global operators. A development of a traditional tool, our product features custom fabricated large diameter wheels fitted with moulded track pads in lieu of tyres. The large diameter wheels and track pads enable the grapnel to roll over adverse seabeds, minimising tow tension. The custom fabrications resist the loadings caused by a deeply embedded fluke. Coupled with high strength axle assemblies and drawbar, this is a much more rugged and reliable product than alternative more traditional designs. The DTG is supplied with interchangeable tines to enable cable recovery from depths of up to 1m (with short tines) and up to 2m (with long tines); so only one size DTG is required for a wide range of burial depths The tines are fitted with shear pins which fail at a designed load, allowing a trapped tine to hinge back releasing the grapnel from an obstruction.
Due to its robust construction the tool is suitable for extended use when required, such as clearance runs at planned trench depth before cable trenching. We also offer a sensor and acoustic telemetry package which enables monitoring of pitch and roll (within preset ranges). When combined with logged cable tension this data can be used to ‘ground truth’ Burial Assessments from geophysical and point geotechnical survey data. The same package, with a different sensor, can be used to confirm cable capture.
