A plea to visitors coming to Skye! It appears that the 2026 visitor season has well and truly started, so if you are coming to drive on our roads, would you please give a thought to those of us who live and work on this island! We have jobs to go to, children to drop off and collect, hospital and other appointments to attend, trains to catch, etc. Please bear in mind the following and show other road users some consideration:-
1. The speed limit on double carriageway road in Scotland is 60mph β this means that if you drive everywhere at 40mph or below, you will probably be holding up other (particularly local) traffic. So if a queue of traffic inevitably builds up behind you, please pull over as soon as it is safe to do so, and let other vehicles pass. Similarly do not stop in the middle of the road to take photographs!
2. Most of our roads are not dual carriageway β this means that in order to get past you, other road users need to overtake. Please allow them do so, and leave a safe distance between you and the vehicle in front to let them pull in again.
3. When you pass a sign which has a picture of an HGV, 7.5t and 40 inside a red circle, this means that vehicles over 7.5t are restricted to 40mph β most hire cars and camper vans do not, to the best of my knowledge, weigh over 7.5tonnes, so this restriction DOES NOT apply to them!
4. If and when you end up driving on Single Track roads, ALWAYS remember that we drive ON THE LEFT! So if you do meet traffic coming in the opposite direction, always pull in to the left, either in, or opposite a passing place β this way you should avoid head on collisions!
5. NEVER drive off the edge of the metalled road on any of our roads β most of our verges are either very soft, rocky, or have sharp edges! Doing this is one way to almost guarantee that you will puncture one or more of your tyres (if not more damage) and end up getting stuck and having to call out a tyre replacement service (as virtually no cars have spare wheels these days!).
6. Learn about priority signs, we had a car drive at us on both sections of road in Breakish yesterday, theres multiple accvidents there every year. The big arrow is the one with priority for anyone in doubt π
Thank you in advance and enjoy your stay!
