Winner | LRSA 30 Hour Design Challenge

Congratulations to the team from Loughborough University for Habilis Athletica – The Adaptable Sports Furniture!

A bench becomes a basketball hoop. Seating around a tree unfolds into a badminton court. A parasol transforms into swingball!

This playful suite of street furniture brings a fresh perspective to everyday public spaces, combining places to relax with opportunities to get active. Using reclaimed materials, the designs invite communities across Leicestershire and Rutland to come together through play.

The judges commented:
“Habilis Athletica was a clear standout, with exceptional presentation and a whole suite of thoughtfully considered street furniture. We particularly loved the bench that transforms into a basketball hoop and the tree surround that becomes a badminton court. Playful, inventive and full of fun, the proposal made us see familiar street furniture differently.”

Well done to Suruthi Srinivasan, Abi Tonking, Merlin Toms, Isaac Graham, Conall Hancock and Fletcher Hart - our winning team!

Congratulations to the team from Loughborough University for The Doodle Pavilion!

From Waste to Play—this playful proposal transforms recovered plastic into one continuous looping structure. Inspired by a bead maze, it brings together spaces to sit, gather and get moving, inviting children, students and families to interact.

The judges commented:
“The Doodle Pavilion was such a fun idea, with interaction at the heart of the design. We loved how one large looping structure created so many opportunities for play, movement and gathering. The proposal was beautifully presented, with a sheet that clearly captured its character and how people could engage with it.”

Well done to Izzy, Ollie, Demira, Sara and Gursimran!

Highly Commended | LRSA 30 Hour Design Challenge

Congratulations to the team from De Montfort University’s Leicester School of Architecture for Parallax – Shifting Perspective!

Responding to the theme of Perspective, the design proposes a timber seating structure near Leicester’s Bede Park; a place to pause, meet and see familiar surroundings differently.

The judges commented:

“Parallax stood out for its thoughtful design development and engaging mix of media. The models, renders, plan and section clearly communicated the proposal and how it evolved. We particularly liked how the design responded to a specific site while offering the potential to be adapted for other locations across Leicestershire.”

An impressive amount of exploration in just 30 hours. Well done to Priya Kalsi, Jatinder Takhar, Rayaan Malik, Amman Shaikh, Nason Maonde, Cosmin Onofrei and Rishi Valand!

Runner Up | LRSA 30 Hour Design Challenge

Congratulations to the team from Loughborough University for Bellfound!

Drawing on the history of Loughborough’s bell foundry, the proposal gives old, broken bells a new purpose. A family of benches and seating structures pairs reused bell metal with reclaimed timber, celebrating local heritage through familiar forms seen in a new way.

The judges commented:

“Bellfound impressed us with its clear presentation and simple, effective use of the bell form. The team explored several bench designs, creating a coherent family of furniture rooted in the history of Loughborough’s bell foundry. Using old, broken bells gave the proposal a strong connection between its form, material and local story.”

Well done to Jessie Yu, Kimi Ahlowalia, Mia Albrecht, Keanu Coetsee, Jessica Dainter and Maxwell Davies!

LOVE ARCHITECTURE 2026 | Guided Walk of Leicester City Centre

How well do you know the architecture of Leicester?

The trail has a history of its own. The original architectural plaques were installed in 1984, highlighting some of Leicester’s notable buildings and their stories. Over the years, some plaques went missing; so in 2024, we helped fill in the gaps, bringing the trail back to life and ensuring more of Leicester’s architectural history can be discovered.

Come along, look up, and see Leicester differently.
