Mucenicii are a traditional Romanian treat that most Romanians grew up with. 🧑

But have you ever heard of them or, even better, tried one?

Mucenicii are made with the same rich, slow-proved dough I use for my cozonac, but without the walnut and cocoa filling. Instead, once baked, they are brushed with organic honey and topped with roasted walnuts. 🍯🌰

Think softest brioche, buttery and beautifully aromatic, with a lovely citrusy note from fresh lemon and orange zest. πŸŠπŸ‹

If you love cozonac but walnut and cocoa filling isn’t quite your thing, mucenicii are a wonderful way to experience the same beautiful dough in a different way. 🧑

And they’re still available on the website at a special price, but the offer won’t last forever.

Made with organic flour from , fresh citrus, butter, milk and eggs from , and carefully chosen ingredients from

Thank you to the wonderful people behind these ingredients for helping me bring this little taste of Romania to you. 🧑

Have you ever tried a mucenic? πŸ‡·πŸ‡΄

It’s absolutely okay to look after yourself, eat well and have goals. ❀️

But with everything these days being about protein and veggies, sometimes you just want a proper carb. And you know what? That’s okay too. 😍

I sincerely believe in balance, in enjoying the things that make us happy, sharing good food with people we love, occasionally eating something indulgent, and not feeling guilty about it.

Enjoying food is part of enjoying life. ❀️

If you’re Romanian, you probably already know what mucenici are. ❀️

But if you’re not Romanian, here’s a little bit of context: mucenici honour the 40 Christian martyrs who gave their lives for their faith, and they hold a special place in Romanian Orthodox tradition (the majority of Romanians are Orthodox Christians).

And if you’ve never tried them, I highly recommend you do, because I honestly don’t think you’ll find a better pastry in a supermarket.

For those of us who grew up with mucenici, maybe all we need to do is remember our mums and grandmas making them in the kitchen, with so much care and dedication, while we waited impatiently for them to be ready. ❀️

Following a Romanian cozonac maker is not easy, especially when cozonac is the kind of dessert that tastes like childhood, family gatherings, Christmas or Easter, and you’re sitting there watching it from a safe distance.

I know it’s not easy. And if you’re going to put yourself through this kind of emotional endurance, you might as well try one. 😌

And even if you don’t, I truly appreciate every single one of you who’s here.

You had me at cozonac. ❀️
