1/ The Dram House - great neighbourhood vibe with a deep collection of every day drams, classics and curiosities.

2/ Proto whisky bar - super geeky with lots of Whisky Agency and Whisky Sponge bottling’s. Fun!

3/ Fannou House Whisky Bar - Feels European and is perfect for an upscale chilled out moment of reflection. Again, solid collection of whisky. Opens 6pm which is helpful.

Fantastic, indeed awe inspiring, visit to China’s Leizhou whisky distillery (pronounced ‘lie-joe’). Felt like a cross between a theme park for whisky lovers and the Apple HQ in Cupertino, California. They distilled their first new make on 2nd July 2021 and now have ~ 550,000 casks of whisky maturing. This number is expected to increase to 1.2M in 5 years. Yes. 55 different cask types. Their own STR cooperage, fire station and CO2 recycling plant. An ability to bottle up to 50,000 bottles per hour if they feel like it. A craft distillery within the main distillery for running fun experiments. A swimming pool. And, and, and… Chinese whisky is exciting 🇨🇳🥃

This is Raj ‘Mr C’ Chavda 😀

A legend of label design and (in our view) key to the visibility and growth of Japanese whisky brands like Chichibu and Karuizawa over the past 15 years or so. Amongst his first Japanese whisky labels were the now iconic Karuizawa Geisha’s, beginning in 2014 for Speciality Drinks. While many people were responsible (and the brands themselves had great labels) ‘Mr C’, we feel, captured the essence of these wonderful brands, elevating their appeal and attracting a new audience.

Aside from Japanese whisky Raj has been instrumental behind the scenes as Creative Director for The Whisky Exchange (which needs zero introduction) where he created the identity for Elements of Islay (2006), Port Askaig, Single Malts of Scotland, The Whisky Trail, Black Tot rum and many more 😅🤩 Now with Elixir Distillers he’s part of the family bringing the brand identity of new distillery Portintruan to life.

Above all that, he’s a great pal, a brilliant person and we love him loads.

Loved visiting in Hong Kong’s Causeway Bay 😍🥃 Long ago the area was a fishing village and the site of the islands first typhoon shelter, but that’s another story. The abyss bar is a place to discover and enjoy great whiskies, familiar and unfamiliar. They also sell Asahi beer as a refresher for your palate. Can’t wait to return 😀

Enjoyed the visit to the Open Gate brewery in Baltimore, Maryland - the 1st experimental Guinness brewery in the USA, opened in 2018. Whilst production has been scaled down to “select experimental beers” on a 10-barrel pilot system you can still enjoy the restaurant, shop and taproom, and tours which delve into the history of Guinness and how some of their beers are made. Overall worth a visit 😀

NB. Production of Guinness Baltimore blonde has been moved to FX Matt Brewing Company in New York. It is unclear if a name change will be forthcoming to e.g. Guinness Blonde - apparently consumer connotations of Baltimore water (the harbour?) aren’t favourable, even if the water quality at the Open Gate facility in Maryland is excellent.

By all accounts the Open Gate brewery that opened in Chicago in 2023 is a glorified taproom (still keen to visit) while the London UK facility (expected later in 2025) is going to be a microbrewery and culture hub.

PS. The Baltimore facility is located on the site of the historic Calvert distillery, acquired by Seagrams and later Diageo. Cool :-)

Good fun visiting the distillery in Virgina. Enjoyed a tour followed by some of their rye. Favourite was the mid strength offering at 92 proof / 46% - the “Distiller’s Edition” Single Barrel Rye Whisky 😀
