Developed during his 2024 residency at the Nottingham Gravity Lab., Ringdown is Conrad Shawcross' attempt to explore the final moments of two spiralling black holes before they merge in a dramatic event that warps time and creates gravitational waves- ripples travelling across spacetime. Constructed from steel, aluminium, bronze, mechanical and audio systems, Ringdown reminds us that art and science alike strive to gain insights into abstract, intangible realms that lie beyond our grasp.

A welcoming trend in the contemporary scene this past year would definitely be the disappearing boundary between different formats and how artists are increasingly embracing multi-sensory experience within the standard white box setting.

The latest show by Peter Doig in the Serpentine Gallery is one of those which defies categorisation and simply bring a relaxing atmosphere to viewers to make them feel at ease to visit a gallery, enjoy the soothing music from rare sound systems and vintage recordings in comfortable seatings, and admire the beautifully-drawn paintings hung on the wall.

Let's hope to see more shows like this which encourage more people to connect with contemporary art, and give people the much-needed break from AI, infographic-overload and never-ending notifications on wearable devices.

Art is what inspires people for creative and critical thinking, and we need that more than ever in 2026.

One of the pioneers in infographics extravaganza, Ryoji Ikeda's latest piece Data.Cosm [n°1] premiered in 180 studios London earlier this year and is now being extended "due to popular demand" - a phrase which has been used far too often on almost every art shows now without proof of how popular it actually is.

Nevertheless, it is a truly enjoyable experience visually with a nice accompanying soundtrack. The piece has utilised data on nature – from the microscopic scale of particle physics to the macroscopic of astrophysics, as was previously evident in the artist's data-verse project. It would have been even better though if the artist could somehow inform the viewers what each of the data sets is about within the display, rather than a pure spectacle so those who paid to watch the screening will get a better understanding of the meanings behind the data sets, if any.

The entire piece lasts for 17 minutes, this video is a clip of the full show.

The element of water sits at the heart of The Story of Fixity, a new installation where an immersive three-channel film permeates into the space in which it is presented. For the first time water takes centre stage in the artist’s meticulous research.

Colourless, odourless and flavourless, this ubiquitous substance has many forms and functions. Goudal reflects on its paradoxical role in shaping our terrestrial landscapes; as a key transporter of minerals from one land to another, that form and nourish ecosystems; and as an essential element with the power to sustain and destroy life on earth.

Across three screens, Goudal pairs the cycles of water with the rhythms of day and night, bringing together universally understood rhythms with new scientific research.

For his first solo show in the UK, Larkin Durey selected 6 pieces by Giovanni Fabián Guerrero which take the viewers to his P'urhépecha roots and the daily life and history of his community in Cherán, Michoacán, Mexico.

From the official show description - "In 2011, after years of cartel violence, systemic corruption and persistent logging of the forest, the communal citizens of Cherán launched a campaign to initiate a resistance movement. Galvanized by a group of local women, the protests succeeded not only in driving out the cartel and those destroying the forest, but in establishing the origins of the town’s self-government that have since resulted in Cherán's legal autonomy and one of the lowest rates of violence in Mexico.

His paintings are often kaleidoscopic panoramas with an expansive, mystical sense of place and a pulsating, cosmic energy. Community elders, family forebearers, Sikuames (witches) and Xurhiskis (healers of the body and spirit) merge with spirits of the forest, birds and animals in densely layered narratives that appear to speak in many voices and across time. These works are often displayed alongside masks constructed from branches and leaves from the forest and wasp honeycomb, bringing the spirit guardians of the forest into physical form and reminding us all of their power."
