REAL SHAKSHOUKA. REALLY TUNISIAN.

This day means a lot. After 5 years of bringing real Tunisian Harissa to the people and fighting for Tunisia’s recognition. We decided it’s time to do the same for Shakshouka.

Thats right. Shakshouka’s origins are Tunisian/Maghreb and even the name comes from the Amazigh language “to mix”. Which in this case, we’ve done for you ;)

Made in Tunis with all natural ingredients including, Extra-Virgin Olive Oil and of course Lamiri Harissa. No rules here, just good ingredients: enjoy with eggs for brunch or pair with white fish for a 10/10 dinner (personal top hack). This is grandma’s, grandma’s recipe in a tin. A 5 minute, 1 pan meal we grew up eating, and we hope you enjoy it as much as we do.

**No, it does not have eggs inside/included

Bouselsla: Where It All Began

Named after Ahamed Bouselsla a local marabout (saint), Bouselsla is where you’ll find the highest concentration of Lamiri’s on earth. Originating in the 1950s under the early government of Habib Bourguiba as scattered homes for Amazigh families pushed out of La Marsa Ville. Eventually growing to become a maze of winding alleys and earning the label of “hood”.

My dad (AKA Barga) grew up here in a one-storey, roofless house with seven siblings, before making a name for himself playing semi-pro football for La Marsa, then migrating to London to sling pizzas at the worlds first .

Every summer we visited Bouselsla. But I never saw the hood people refered to, for me it was cousins, family meals and running to Sidi Abdelaziz beach. Yes, there were colourful characters and things occasionally kicked off, but more present was the sense of community and generosity, especially during Eid.

Since producing our first 10 batches of harissa there and spending so much time wandering as an adult, the changes are clear as day. Sunday Souk is now a hotspot for hipsters digging through the second-hand clothes market and the odd brave tourist coming to see whats on offer. But for me Bouselsla is still family, slow living, and around 300 relatives.

With last weeks floods I thought of my friends and family there and took comfort in knowing that like during the revolution: When the system struggles, Bouselsla steps up 🇹🇳

The people of Harissa - 2025 Harvest | Cap Bon to Kairouan.

When talking about “food provenance” we often focus on quality. Like Parmigiano or Champagne, some things are tied to the land that made them and don’t get me wrong, harissa deserves that respect. From the thread we hang the chillies on, soil they’re grow in or wood we burn to smoke them, every detail matters. It’s why Tunisian harissa is the GOAT.

However there’s a more important reason why “real” harissa matters. The people.

This year, we travelled with the photographer Skyler Dahan to meet the hands behind the harvest. Families who plant, pick, string, smoke and grind these chillies year after year. Kids growing up in houses stained red from decades of sun-dried Baklouti.

A reminder of why UNESCO added our harissa to its “Intangiable list of Cultural Heritage” and why to look beyond the label and know where your food really comes from.
