Why do cake makers ask for a deposit/retainer you ask?
I learned the hard way this weekend. I've not only been let down once but twice.
I do this not only because I love to make cakes and it's my calm place (well most of the time) but this enables me to pay my bills, which are constantly going up and I can ill afford, hence doing this to bring in that extra income. Not to lose money.
Little do people realise, I've already invested my time researching, planning, checking stock(although limited due to space and costs), messaging back and forth to make sure everything will be perfect for your special occasion. I'm not a business that holds stock, this has to be ordered in plenty of time and paid for upfront by myself. Toppers have to be made or ordered well in advance at a cost to myself. This is before any deposit is received.
Baking and decorating cakes is very time consuming and happens over days, often fitting into a busy work and family schedule. On many occasions we put your orders first before making plans, holidays, events and cancelling family time, as we are totally invested in giving you the best.
Please think if we were to ring you up last minute would you be happy, no, or if I blocked you, no, but you do this. If you change your mind fine, but let us know in advance so we wouldn't be out of pocket with the costs of materials, ingredients and already invested time. We could have cancelled other possible orders.
I apologise that this is long, but in all my time I have never complained. I sometimes take hits on orders and ever increasing prices. Many times my cakes are done at cost and don't cover my time etc. Please have this understanding when ordering a bespoke cake or item from anyone in the future.
Thank you.
