The mirror has silver leaf to give it shine and I discovered that making a candle out of icing actually works quite well (with a bit of edible glaze)

A 12th birthday in isolation was not going to keep us from celebrating and, as we couldn’t go to Warner Brothers Studios (again) like we’d planned, we needed a cake that JK Rowling would be proud ... now I have a friend who is a pro at cake sculpting and I am certainly not but hey I think my Niffler is looking pretty smug.

As usual it would have been better not to ‘learn on the job’ but every fail is just a Further Attempt In Learning as they say and I certainly leant a lot with this one. Eg. I’m never using ganache again for sure as that caused one epic and sticky fail. However it all held together juuuust long enough. Phew. Ooo, Maybe I will get a cake sculpting class for Christmas? I am enjoying my journey of learning cake decorating on my own but possibly it would be nice to have the odd lesson from a pro LOL... maybe if I’m nice to Santa... I could make him a cake. ;)

My daughters 10th birthday was all based around a girls night out at the cinema. Lights, popcorn, film and friends so this is what I made. The cake itself was a marbled chocolate & vanilla cake with caramel ganache and layers of Oreos (her favourite biscuit). Making the popcorn from icing was great fun. Then there was plenty of airbrushing which is something i don’t get to do very often. The girls were very excited by the cake and they spent a long time looking at all the (edible) photo memories which were on the film reels which created a lot of great conversation too. A happy birthday girl and a happy mum.

There are some cake themes that never get old. I the love the range that can be made for a Harry Potter fan and here’s one complete with cake pop golden snitch. This was a first for me as it all had to me completely dairy free and making dairy free ganache was... umm, interesting.

for her 6th birthday, my youngest daughter asked for "a farm cake with a tractor that went round". I'm not sure how many little girls ask for birthday cakes that move but 2 motors, 1 servo, a string of lights and a heap of gears later.....

A whole big pile of chocolate cake with salted caramel ganache and covered in vanilla icing made for an avid shop-a-holic who loves her big brands.
