There’s something about the sea that makes strangers feel a little less like strangers. 🌊
Yesterday we spent the afternoon crabbing from Saundersfoot harbour.
There were fishermen, families, kids running around, lines getting tangled and everyone generally keeping an eye on what everyone else was up to.
My son kept accidentally throwing his line too far out, so the fishermen would fish it back in for us.
The family next to us had a much better crabbing method. They’d noticed we’d had absolutely no luck with bacon, so the Dad handed my son some sardines to try instead.
Then he spotted that George’s net was missing a bit and gave him his.
When they packed up, they left us their bucket of crabs.
And when we left, we left the crabs with the fishermen to use as bait.
Then a man wandered over to show us a jellyfish he’d spotted in the water.
None of us knew each other.
But for a few hours, there was this lovely little sense of everyone being in it together.
Sharing bait.
Sharing equipment.
Sharing knowledge.
Showing each other what we’d found.
And I think that’s one of the things I love most about the coast.
It’s not just the things you find. It’s the people you meet while you’re looking.
