Sarah Bakes Cakes is me, Sarah Walker, a baker and cake designer based in Haslemere. Mum to three small boys, I make bespoke cakes from my little kitchen, and can deliver in Surrey, Hampshire and West Sussex.

Haven’t been on here in a while, even though the kids are big now half term still seems busier. Plus trying to stop everything from melting took some effort. But kicking the week off right with pretty pastels and rainbows, you can’t go wrong really.

I’m not sure what I make of mountain biking as a hobby for a child. As a mum to a biker I can tell you that whilst it is great that your child leaves the house at 8am and doesn’t return until dark, spending his days like we used to in the good old 80s, it is also extremely expensive and worrisome. “Mum, I’m just taking my bike to ‘cos I need to get the wheel/shock/crank etc etc fixed” - excellent my boy, how much will that cost me? “Mum, can you come and get me from the middle of nowhere in the Punchbowl because I think I’ve broken my collar bone/I think I’m concussed/I’ve definitely dislocated my shoulder etc etc”. On the whole I think sitting in your room looking at TikTok is safer and cheaper (jokes 🙄).

I can be pretty jokey on here, I try to keep it light hearted and a bit silly. But really I’m a very lucky girl. Here I am making this cake to help a special woman mark her 80th birthday, crafting little mementos of all the things she loves. And guess what? I got to make her a cake ten years ago for her 70th too. AND her daughter’s wedding cake last summer. Cake rocks.

This family have been pulling it out of the bag for me for many years, from sausage dogs to SpongeBob, football pitches with a lump of cheese to a Nike Air Jordan. And almost always in their signature banana chocolate chip (which is a winner btw). This time round I hadn’t actually heard of Brawl Stars but Phoenix Crow turned out ok.

This one needed to make it all the way to Cornwall so we made her sturdy with a foundation of white chocolate ganache, which also has the benefit of being yummy. Not sure what I’d rather, a cute mini fondant pastie or the real deal?
