Today is my big chef’s birthday! 🎉🎂 17 today! ❤️

After the last few years of dress cakes to coincide with her pending fashion career 👗😂, my big chef decided she wanted to make her own birthday cake this year! Although, obviously, Mum still had to go out and buy all the ingredients… because who else was going to make that happen?! 😂🙄

So here it is! A little different from the cakes of the last few years, but made by the birthday girl herself! 🥰 Vanilla sponge, vanilla buttercream icing and some very fancy piping around the edge! 😂🎂

I think we might have a future baker on our hands… although I’m not sure she’s quite ready to take over the whole kitchen just yet! 👩‍🍳😂

Happy 17th birthday to my big chef! ❤️🎉

Yesterday was our dinosaur-loving girl’s 5th birthday! 🦖💚🎂

She’s never been much of a cake lover, so when we asked what she wanted for her birthday, her answer was very simple… COOKIES! 😂🍪

Big sister jumped at the chance to get involved and made her the most delicious birthday treat — brown butter Terry’s Chocolate Orange-filled cookies, topped with a chunky Terry’s Chocolate Orange segment. 🍊🍫🤎 They were every bit as good as they sound, and our birthday girl was very happy with her choice!

Of course, she still wanted a birthday cake… just not for herself! 😂 She requested a dinosaur cake for all her friends to take home from her party. 🦖

So we made a cute vanilla sponge with vanilla buttercream, finished with adorable dinosaur wafer decorations. 🦕💚

A dinosaur-loving girl, a kitchen-loving big sister and two very different birthday treats… I’d say it was a pretty perfect combination! 🥰

Happy birthday to my husband! ❤️

As usual, the birthday grump has made it very clear that he doesn’t want any fuss and would quite happily let his birthday pass with absolutely nothing happening 😂

Unfortunately for him, he married someone who loves to bake, and I wasn’t prepared to let him have nothing for his birthday! So, after a little negotiation, we compromised on a cheesecake… because apparently that counts as “not making a fuss” 🤣

So this was quickly thrown together last night — an Oreo cheesecake with an Oreo biscuit base, a creamy cream cheese filling packed with broken Oreo pieces, and plenty of Oreo goodness 😋🍪🍰

Not bad for a last-minute birthday bake! ❤️

Happy birthday, you grumpy old man! I hope you enjoy it… even if you pretend you don’t want the attention! 😂❤️

Hi everyone! 👋 It's been a little while since I've posted.
Life has been a bit of a whirlwind lately! We've moved house, and between me and my husband we've had our fair share of health issues (mostly him 💕), so baking has had to take a bit of a back seat.
On top of that, we've been busy with lots of induction days for my little chef, who starts big school next month. I honestly can't believe how quickly the time has gone! 🥹
I'm really hoping to get back to sharing a bake with you all every week. And once my little chef has started school and we're into a new routine, I'll be taking orders again! 😁
I can't wait to get back into the kitchen.
Today's bake is a classic Apple & Blackberry Crumble 🍎🫐. The blackberries were picked on a family outing—although it's a miracle there were enough left to bake with after three of my children and my husband kept "taste-testing" them along the way! 😂
Now for the big question... are you team custard or team ice cream? In our house, we're split right down the middle! 🍨🥣

I know I've had a few baking fails lately, but I still believe everything I've made has tasted pretty good... apparently not according to my harshest critic. 😂

My mini chef insisted that we buy doughnuts from the shop because, and I quote:

"The ones Mummy made aren't nice." 😳💔

So off we went to buy shop-bought doughnuts. She carefully picked the one she wanted, proudly sat down to eat it...
..and then proceeded to eat only the icing and about two bites of the actual doughnut. 🤦🏽‍♀️🤣

Meanwhile, the homemade doughnuts that apparently "weren't nice" disappeared pretty quickly!

Children really do keep you humble. One minute you're feeling proud of your baking, the next you're being roasted by a tiny human who survives mostly on air, chaos, and the icing scraped off a doughnut. 😂🍩

Maybe I'll stick to baking for everyone else for now!

Another baking fail today... 🤦🏽‍♀️😂

After a few conversations in the nursery pick-up line about pasties, bakes and all things pastry-related, I decided it was finally time to have a go at making cronuts. What could possibly go wrong?

Well... I've now learned that putting dough in a recently used grill to rise is NOT a good idea. Instead of helping them prove nicely, it started cooking them slightly, which meant they didn't rise properly at all! 🙈

At that point I had two choices: throw them away or carry on and see what happened. Naturally, I carried on. The result? A batch of very flat, slightly questionable-looking cronuts coated in plenty of cinnamon sugar. 😂

Despite their appearance, they actually turned out surprisingly tasty! Myself, my husband and the two older girls all volunteered as taste testers, and we're happy to report that they still tasted absolutely delicious. 😋

So while they definitely won't be winning any beauty contests, they weren't a complete disaster after all. Baking is all about learning from mistakes (or at least that's what I'm telling myself!).

I'll definitely be giving these another go in the next few days and hopefully next time they'll look a little more like cronuts and a little less like cinnamon sugar pancakes! 🤣🥐

Another bake fail in our kitchen today 🤦🏽‍♀️🤣

Since Mr Smith is fully committed to this low carb/keto life, we’ve been seeing loads of recipes floating around for “healthy” sweet potato brownies… so of course, we thought we’d give them a go.

Now, I’ll be honest… you genuinely can’t taste the sweet potato (which feels like a win at first), but that’s mainly because the peanut butter completely takes over. And not in a good, “wow this is delicious” way… more in a “why is this glued to the roof of my mouth and refusing to move?” kind of way 😅

Texture? Questionable.
Taste? Confusing.
Effort? Not worth it.

BUT… plot twist… the kids are happily eating them without a clue that they’re full of sweet potato 🤣 So I guess it’s not a total loss!

Would I make them again? Absolutely not.
Will the kids finish the batch? Also absolutely yes 🙃

My big blonde took the reins today and created this delicious chocolate chip cookie slab 🍪 Soft, golden, and packed with flavour… even if it didn’t have quite as many chocolate chips as planned. Turns out hubby had secretly helped himself to a packet 🤦🏽‍♀️ (don’t worry—he’s back on his keto/sugar-free diet now, so future bakes are safe! 😄).

It was full-on kitchen chaos with my tiny chef eager to join in and cookie mix somehow ending up on the walls 😂 But this is exactly where the magic happens—real moments, real memories, and learning skills that last a lifetime.

And the best part? She’s now old enough to clean up after herself too 😉

Well… this one definitely turned a few heads! 😄

I had a fun and slightly cheeky request for a boobie cake paired with classic Bakewell tarts, and I couldn’t wait to bring it to life. This cake features a light and fluffy vanilla sponge, layered and coated in smooth vanilla buttercream, then finished with a soft blush-toned fondant for that clean, polished look.

Carefully sculpted into shape, the design is playful yet elegant, with the Bakewell tarts taking centre stage—adding that perfect pop of colour and a delicious almond-fruity twist to the overall creation.

Safe to say, it’s one of those cakes that gets everyone talking and coming back for seconds! 🎂✨

I haven’t been able to bake for quite a while, so when this special request came in, there was no way I could say no 💛

This Gruffalo-themed cake was made for my little chef’s “superhero best friend,” which made it even more meaningful to create. It’s a soft and fluffy vanilla sponge, layered and covered in smooth white chocolate buttercream. Around the base, I added rich chocolate buttercream to create a rustic “woodland” effect, and lightly tinted the white chocolate buttercream with green to give a subtle grassy finish 🌿

The cake is topped with all the beloved Gruffalo characters, bringing the whole magical forest theme to life 🐭🦊🐍🦉

And of course, my little chef couldn’t resist getting involved—stepping in at the very important final stage to “clean” the bowl (which might just be her favourite part of baking😄).
