Inner Wheel Club of Clevedon

Inner Wheel Club of Clevedon Clevedon, North Somerset, Inner Wheel District 10 GB&I, disbanded at the end of June 2025.

Our thanks go to everyone who followed our page and to all the Inner Wheel members worldwide whom it has
been our great pleasure to know.

It is with heavy hearts that we have to report the closure of the Inner Wheel Club of Clevedon. Situations beyond our control have made it necessary to disband the club, in our 78th year.

We have enjoyed serving the community and have met some wonderful people during these years, but we have a*o made lifelong friends amongst our fellow members.

Our grateful thanks to the lovely people of Clevedon for the magnificent support you have given us over the years.

NEWSLETTER FEBRUARY 2025

Hello everyone. It’s been a very mixed month, both in the Club and weatherwise. We’ve had a lot of rain, alternate days it seemed at times, but as I write it’s a beautiful spring-like day, which gives hopes for better weather to come.

Nine happy ladies met at The Crab Apple Inn for the usual Social Tuesday lunch. You can only see seven in the photo – President Sue is hiding behind Sally and I’m behind the camera! 😊
I had to leave early for an appointment, but I’m told it was a lovely lunch with lots of laughs and good conversation.

This month saw the start of our annual District 10 Skittles competition. For those who haven’t come across this West Country game, it’s a bit like ten pin bowling, only played on a wooden alley with wooden balls, and usually in a pub! We were drawn to play the Inner Wheel Club of Newent, at the Tudor Arms in Slimbridge, teams of eight are usually required but we could only field six, so each member played one extra “end”. After a lovely lunch, we came home victorious, so we’re now looking forward to the next round.

Our thanks to Newent for a fun and friendly afternoon
We enjoyed the company of members of the Inner Wheel Club of Chipping Sodbury and our District Chairman Pat Rawlings at an afternoon tea at our meeting on 19th March. President Sue gave everyone a whistle, then read a short story which featured the names of those present, at the mention of which they had to blow their whistle. When “all” or “everyone” was mentioned, everybody had to blow the whistles. It caused a great deal of hilarity – and noise! A raffle in aid of the MPS (Mucopolysaccharidoses) Society was held and raised a good sum for our Presidents’ charity for the year. An enjoyable afternoon – especially the cream tea, thanks President Hazel – but unfortunately we were again few in numbers.

Several of our members are still poorly, so we wish them a speedy return to full health.

We wish you all some lovely spring weather to raise the spirits.

JANUARY 2025 NEWSLETTER

It’s a bit late but our wishes are no less sincere for that - happy New Year everyone. It’s been a very strange month, with several of our members ill and others caring for husbands who have been ill too, so most of our contact this month has been through our Whatsapp group, which is a blessing at times like this.

Social Tuesday lunch was at the Moon and Sixpence, with only a few of us able to attend. Sometimes, though, small gatherings are more fun since you get a chance to talk to everyone, something that can prove difficult on a very long table. The food was excellent, as always, and there was much laughter and good conversation.

The monthly meeting suffered the same fate, with many members still ill, which was a great pity because those of us who did get there had a wonderful afternoon. Unable to get tickets for a Burns Night, we decided to give our January meeting a Scottish flavour with Scottish delicacies instead of our usual cakes.

We were wonderfully entertained by a return visit from Bon Accord, a talented duo who compiled a programme especially for us. We thoroughly enjoyed listening to the wonderful Scottish music, but decided that being invited to take part in the Gay Gordons was a bit beyond us nowadays!

Our best wishes to those who are still fighting off this dreadful ‘flu virus, we hope to see you back with us very soon.

DECEMBER 2024 NEWSLETTER

Hello everyone, I hope you all had a very happy Christmas and are now looking forward to 2025.

Our first job in the run up to Christmas was to deliver the donated goodies to Andrew House, so Monica, Molly and Ann, with Monica’s husband, David, helping with the heavy lifting, visited Jess and two of the residents to hand them over. They were gratefully received as always.

On the 9th several of our members visited Chipping Sodbury Inner Wheel Club, for their Christmas Interclub lunch, always an enjoyable day and thought of as the start of Christmas on District 10.

Tuesday 10th saw at 19 of us at The Salthouse Inn for the Social Tuesday Christmas Lunch. We should have been 20 but our thoughts were with Sue B, who wasn’t well enough to attend. We hope you and Gerry are much better soon, Sue. It was a lovely afternoon and our thanks must go to the staff at The Salthouse for the wonderful food and the amazing service, nothing was too much trouble for them.

Our December meeting is always a Christmas Party with entertainment and this year the choir from the Clevedon Promenade Bowls Club, with their Musical Director and accompanist, Catherine, were invited back as we had enjoyed their performance so much last year.
.

Once again their performance was marvellous and we enjoyed their company at tea afterwards.

As 2024 draws to an end, we wish everyone a very happy and healthy New Year, and look forward to enjoying more fellowship and friendship in 2025.

Yesterday we went to see Clevedon School's show "Legally Blonde". We were warmly welcomed and made to feel we were special guests, as usual, and had a super afternoon watching 130 talented students in an amazing performance. So much energy from both students and staff! Thank you to all involved, whether on stage or support crew - you were all magnificent.

NEWSLETTER NOVEMBER 2024

The November social Tuesday lunch was held at The Little Harp on the seafront. A lovely meal with excellent service and an encouraging turnout of 12 members. Unfortunately, the photos taken by our lovely waitress didn’t appear on my phone by the time I got home. Gremlins at work, I think.

Our concert on 9th November, in aid of the Mucopolysaccharidoses (MPS) Society was a great success, the Long Ashton Orchestra played to a packed hall. The programme opened with Purcell's Rondeau Abdelazar, followed by Beethoven's Egremont Overture. and Piano Sonata No.20. Conductor Chris Holley, aided by Orchestra Leader Oliver Humpage on the piano, explained the construction of a symphony, using Brahms' Symphony No.1 as an example.
The second half of the programme was Beethoven's mighty Symphony No.5.

The appreciative audience were extremely generous with raffle ticket purchases and donations, after our member Sheena explained the charity, the MPS Society, and their support of her three year old granddaughter.

President Sue awarded the prize for the Name the Bear competition to our member Yvonne, who chose the name "Suzy".
We are all delighted with the marvellous sum raised for MPS and thank everyone who attended the concert – and especially the Long Ashton Orchestra for a wonderful evening.

At our monthly meeting we had a return visit from Sarah from St. John’s Ambulance,
accompanied by NHS 1st Responder Sally and retired 1st Responder Judith, who were warmly welcomed following their previous visit to us. Sarah gave us a brief recap on Cardiac Resuscitation and the use of a defibrillator, then advice on several subjects including choking, bleeding, fainting and anaphylactic shock. We were surprised to hear that Sally is the only 1st Responder in the area, and that she can be called out at any time 24 hours a day.

President Sue then presented Viv, our most recent member, with her badge which had not arrived in time for her induction last month. Also present today was Alison, whom we welcomed as a prospective new member.

At this meeting we were collecting donations for a Christmas hamper for Andrew House, a home for recovering addicts her in Clevedon. These will be delivered in December.
We also collected handbags for an Inner Wheel District 10 initiative, which were delivered to the District meeting on Monday 25th, when the Speaker was Jean Long BEM from Happy Handbags. These bags, filled with toiletries and hygiene essentials are distributed to women living in crisis situations, on the street, in sheltered accommodation, or hostels.

Several of our members have been on the Sick List this month and we wish them all a speedy return to full health.

Thank you so much to the Long Ashton Orchestra for a wonderful concert last night here in Clevedon. Thank you also to the very appreciative audience who were very generous to our charity, the MPS Society; final figures are not yet available but it looks as if a significant sum has been raised for them.

OCTOBER 2024 NEWSLETTER

Hello everyone, - and welcome to another month in Clevedon.
The Crab Apple Inn was the venue for this month’s Social Tuesday Lunch, and ten members enjoyed some lovely food and even lovelier company. As always the conversation flowed, with lots of laughter, as we all caught up with each other’s news.

t’s been a fairly quiet month on the surface, but behind the scenes a lot of sterling work has been going on as we prepare for our Charity Concert on 9th November,7.30pm, at Christ Church, Clevedon. The Long Ashton Orchestra has been invited back by popular demand, and the programme includes some lovely pieces by well-known composers. Thanks must go to President Sue for all her hard work in arranging the evening and in printing the poster and tickets, and also to the members of the committee for advertising the event. The evening is in aid of the MPS Society, which you may have seen featured on BBC’s Children in Need this year, as one of the young people taking on the Challenge is Ethan, a 16 year old from Bridgend, Wales, who was diagnosed with Hurler Syndrome (Mucopolysaccharidosis type I) at six months old, a rare condition that affects his growth, bones, hearing and eyesight. This is our Presidents’ charity for this year, very dear to our hearts as the little granddaughter of our member, Sheena, is also being supported by MPS. If you are in or near Clevedon on 9th November, please come and enjoy a wonderful evening of music and support this very worthy cause.

At our October meeting Mary, our outgoing Treasurer, who had been on holiday at the handover meeting, was presented with her Past Treasurer badge by President Hazel.

The Speaker this month was Richard Johnson, who told us interesting tales of his in-retirement job as a film extra, mentioning several well-known films he had been involved with, and showing slides of some of the very varied costumes he had worn.

We hope like us you are enjoying a few days of lovely Autumn sunshine, and look forward to another successful month in Inner Wheel in November.

We are sure most folks will have seen the BBC Children in Need's Challenge Squad, one of whom is Ethan, 16 from Bridgend, Wales, who was diagnosed with Hurler Syndrome (Mucopolysaccharidosis type I) at six months old, a rare condition that affects his growth, bones, hearing and eyesight.
The more eagle-eyed among you may have noticed that our concert with the Long Ashton Orchestra on 9th November is in aid of the MPS Society, the charity supporting children affected by these diseases, and their families. They need our support.
Please do come along, tickets are available now, details on the poster.
