The first ever hire here at Solobread, just Jeffy and me against the world. A kind hearted street fighting man. I simply couldn’t imagine the bakery without him.

Things have changed a bit since that winter of 2023. Many buns sampled, more hilarious stories than I can count, flat tyres, belly laughs, broken windscreens, lost keys & 2 cars later here we are with a team of many, and I wouldn’t change a thing.

I wonder if this is interesting enough for all you solobreaders to warrant talking about, but it’s interesting to me and probably a few fellow bakers.

We’ve had our oven for about 3 years now and if you know these ovens, you know how temperamental the steam system can be. Ours is no exception. I got all the parts to replace the entire system and finally had a spare few hours after work yesterday to fit them, pump, lines, nozzles and all. Worn out parts refreshed and it’s flowing like a dream.

Next on the list, the jug rinse in the shop, a pcb replacement on one of the convection ovens, a new spray arm on the sink, sneeze guard, drain pump on the ice machine (anyone else made this mistake?!) and if there’s some time left then maybe I’ll make some bread too.

I turned 32 today.

When people asked me what I’d do for my birthday, I said I’ll just go to work. While it’s usually met with disagreement, what work means to me is different.

I love being at the bakery. I love the team here, I love having lunch together, I love the support we’ve felt from the community since opening the shop. I love how far the business has come over the years, I love seeing all the work and hours I’ve put in finally beginning to mean something. And I just love making bread.

People say if you do what you love you’ll never work a day in your life, but as Tim Cook famously said, that’s a total crock. You’ll work harder than you ever thought possible, but the tools will feel light in your hands.

Thanks to everyone who’s supported us so far. Thanks to the dream team for a birthday well spent.
