SHE’S NEW. THE GOLD MINE ISN’T.

We first designed Sultana to anchor the foyer/conservatory of a home built on a former gold mine. We thought it was time to make her even more golden.

Sultana Gold Rush. Seemed appropriate.

And yes, she’s new. An aged finish isn’t an age, and “vintage” shouldn’t require quite so much interpretation.

We love antiques. We also believe a new rug can be worth buying on its own merits, without an invented past.

We’re designers. When you buy from MHC, you’re buying our work. You’re also buying our smarts.

We know a rug like this calls for a Persian or Turkish knot. Construction that can stand up to foot traffic, pet traffic, and the life that goes by.

We know the fibres matter, too. The best wool and silk. Or, if the budget allows, an upgrade to finer fibres like mohair, alpaca or cashmere.

Buy from women. Canadian women, at that.

More spacious. More intimate. One rug, two seemingly opposite effects.

In this recent install, Naoshima’s flowing pattern makes an already generous room feel even more expansive, while bringing the seating together into a space that feels unified and cozy.

Its limestone colouring creates a quiet connection to the existing fireplace, harmonizing the room’s palette. Against the crisp grid of cabinetry housing a pretty slick record collection, those sweeping lines bring softness and movement. A round wood cocktail table is still to come, adding another welcoming curve.

We have a few of these beauties left in inventory, in stock and ready to ship within the week to your home in Southern Ontario. Farther afield? Delivery may take a few extra days, but we’ll happily ship to your door in time for US Thanksgiving or Christmas.

I love a grid rug when I’m designing a home. It brings structure and pairs beautifully with more floral or abstract designs. Patterns don’t have to match to get along.

This is a 2 x 3 sample of our Hopscotch rug in Vapour, made with New Zealand wool and mulberry silk. Available in four colourways, exclusively at Primavera.

You’ll never see us describing our fibres as “art silk,” “banana silk” or “sari silk.” We tell you what’s actually in the rug. If it’s viscose, call it viscose. A name with “silk” in it isn’t enough.

And please, for the love of god, resist the urge to buy a rug that looks like someone spattered paint on it. Those generic designs are a dime a dozen. A substantial price tag doesn’t make them interesting.

I love a considered abstract. I have considerably less enthusiasm for generic paint-splatter design with a luxury price tag.

Give me beautiful fibres and a good grid.

Look at how the light moves across it. The pattern, the depth, that unmistakable silk sheen.

I live with a different colourway in my own home, so my enthusiasm comes from experience. It’s beautiful underfoot and has proved far more durable than people tend to expect from silk.

One of those materials I keep recommending because I love living with it.

Triglyph exists because sometimes the rug you love is too small.

Maybe you found it while travelling through Turkey, India, or Morocco. Maybe you fell in love with the colour, the weave, the memory of it, and brought it home, only to realize it reads like a postage stamp in the room.

Triglyph was designed for that moment.

Designed as both a rug and a design tool, Triglyph creates a larger foundation around a smaller piece, giving it the scale and presence it needs without asking you to give up the rug you love.

It is a flat weave rug with raised pile, made in all-natural fibres: either 100% New Zealand wool, or New Zealand wool and silk. The contrast in construction gives the piece its quiet architecture: structure, softness, and dimension without overwhelming what is layered with it.

This is what designer-led rug making looks like.

We are not simply choosing from what already exists. We are designing from the realities of interiors: scale, proportion, material, construction, and the way rooms actually come together.

I’m showing the map, the studio shot, and the installation shot because this is exactly where customization becomes practical, not theoretical.

You’ll notice the studio and install versions have fewer flowers than the original map. For some designs, adding or subtracting motifs makes absolute sense. It can shift the whole feeling of the rug without losing the language of the design.

With Anemone, the scale of the flowers is generous enough that you don’t have to worry about the pattern disappearing under furniture. Even in a dining room, the design still reads. But in this case, the clients wanted more negative space and a slightly more modern feeling, so we pulled back some of the floral density.

You could just as easily take this in another direction and add a border, especially for a dining room where part of the field will sit beneath the table and chairs.

This is the kind of customization we love: thoughtful, useful, and tied to how the room will actually be lived in.

Not change for the sake of change. Change that makes the rug work harder for the project.
